I hurried down the stairs. I took a bite of the toast on Charlie's plate, grabbing my bag from the chair next to him.

"Strawberry, my favorite," I mumbled through the toast.

Charlie smiled up at me. "Picked it just for you. Figured you'd get to it before me." I laughed as Ron ran down the steps and into the kitchen.

I turned towards him. "Ready Freddie?"

His face screwed up in confusion.

"I'm not Fred."

I rolled my eyes. "It's a muggle expression."

"Muggles call people Fred?"

"Just grab your bag and come on!" I hurried out the door as Ron followed, grabbing his bag off of the hook.

people really just forget that awfully racist statue in the ministry, huh... the point isn't whether racism or classism is worse or more severe - the point is that muggleborns are still socially regarded as better than goblins, werewolves and elves. that even while enduring discrimination, they're still gleefully participating in the oppression of all the other races in the wizarding world. muggleborns are basically middle-class people

Yes, they’re the equivalent of an emerging bourgeoisie. They have the same political and social rights as pure-blood wizards and the same privileges. Privileges that non-human beings do not have, just like rights that non-human beings do not have.

Let’s remember that Muggle-borns can own house-elves. That means they can be participants in and perpetuators of a system of slavery and dehumanization of sentient, thinking beings. If you have the power to literally own slaves, you’re not someone in a “low social stratum,” to put it mildly.

Basically the person was like “I was in a weird argument with someone earlier and they said that muggleborn discrimination is more akin to classism then racism and that there’s no institutional muggleborn discrimination” and then they gave a very unconvincing argument that didn’t really address the points haha

Well, I’ve already talked about this several times here, and I’ve repeated that the situation of Muggle-borns, based on what we see in the books, has absolutely nothing to do with an apartheid based on ethnic or racial grounds.

Until Voldemort takes over the Ministry in 1997, there is nothing in wizarding society that materially or institutionally places Muggle-borns below the rest in terms of rights. You also can’t openly identify a Muggle-born unless they out themselves as such, since physically they’re indistinguishable from other wizards, and they aren’t required to carry any sort of identification.

Muggle-borns have, by birthright, access to the same spaces as pure-blood or half-blood wizards, as well as the right to study and receive the same education and to access the same jobs. There’s no mechanism separating Muggle-borns from the rest, neither politically nor socially or economically. So I really don’t get the comparison with racial prejudice when, socio-politically speaking, it’s just not the same thing at all.

It’s a small, easy to forget but incredibly important detail that Draco befriended Moaning Myrtle.

Think about it. Draco Malfoy - Slytherin pureblood raised to be a blood supremacist Death Eater who threw the “Mudblood” slur around left and right as a child - grew so close with the ghost of a Muggle-born witch who was killed by his master that they exchanged all their secrets and she was his only true confidant in sixth year. He let her see a side of him that nobody else saw; he let her see that he is sensitive, and people bully him too, and he allowed himself to cry in front of her multiple times.

All of this is canon.

That unlikely friendship alone almost certainly contributed to his change in loyalties and loss of faith in Voldemort’s cause. Her being a ghost forced him to look past her blood status and - quite literally - see her soul. She helped open his eyes to how little a person’s blood status actually matters.

It’s absolutely ridiculous that JKR introduced this crucial, in many ways groundbreaking detail … and then totally brushed it off. A huge basis for a full redemption for Draco in Deathly Hallows was already established by this unlikely friendship, but of course, it went nowhere, because she just wouldn’t dwell on any positive plot point or character development for Draco that she herself came up with and put into canon.
