What languages does Hannibal speak?
So I thought about it. Especially because there are many fics where people just give him a language he can speak.
So I thought about what is officially canon (for the NBC Hannibal), what makes logical sense and what is fanon
Canon:
- Lithuanian: He is Lithuanian and grew up there till the age of 16
- English: He lived in the US
- Italian: he lived there in his late teens and early twenties, season 3 first half
- French: he went to a boring school in Paris, first scene in S3/ the Bonsoir scene
What makes logical sense:
- Russian: mandatory language in Lithuania during the Soviet Union
- Japanese: his aunt Lady Murasaki was Japanese, likely that he leaned it
- Latin: medical terms, his interests in art and culture, knowledge about ancient greek and rom
Fanon:
Basically give him a reason to speak a language and he can speak it.
Like Spanish: is widely spoken in the US, close to Italy and France, comes in handy for medical and social work. So why not. Also because this way he knows if someone is rude in a nother language
How to Hovertext Your Alternate Languages on AO3
In this tutorial, I will explain my method for hovertexting my Mando'a. This tutorial is easy to adapt for other conlangs or really anything you might want to hovertext in your work.
A key aspect of this is going to be to mark out your translations as you type. I have decided on a format of $word ((translation)) for myself, as on the US Keyboard on my iPhone, the $ symbol is in the first layer of symbols, and I type on my phone a lot. This tutorial will work with any symbol indicating the start of your string, however. I'll explain what to do in the relevant section.

Speaking different languages is fun because you switch languages and with that switch your tone, volume, personality, gestures, and even ability to smile. I'm far more smiley, jokey and have what I call my "work persona" in English, than in my native tongue.
Look y’all, the the parte más difícil de speaking multiple languages ain’t the “hablar muchas lenguas” part, కాని “the keeping them separate part, కాదా?
