One of my funniest turning points is that working in a lab that attempted to treat nervous systems as computing circuits that could be understood on their own led me to violently reject mind/body dualism.

Not only in the sense that "the brain is part of the body", but in the sense that critical parts of our experience happen outside the brain.

We worked on insects, and some folks I knew were focused on what sorts of decision circuits underlie different types of crawling and defensive movements. Part of what made it really interesting is that there really aren't enough nerves to make those decisions the way our engineers would, so they ended up hypothesizing that properties of the material itself (muscles/exoskeleton/etc.) contributed to some "decisions".

For example-- it might not be exactly that some caterpillars decide to lift their whole middles up and inch, but rather that that's just what happens when they contract their muscles to crawl and there are no legs in the middle to hold onto the ground. The body "makes the decision" while the nerves do the same thing.

And the more I interacted with these projects, the more upset I got at the notion of humans being a "brain in a meat suit", which treats our minds as some higher being that sits in our brains, shackled to a lower body bound by things like age and hunger and the need for sleep.

We are whole beings are made of complex interactions between our brains and our guts, our hearts, our hormones, our sensory input and so on. And critically, praising disembodiment (in the form of rationality, politeness, stoicism and more) helps to perpetuate systems of oppression by distancing us from our own humanity.
