Naruto Sci-Fi Week 2020.
Day 1: Lost Civilization / Exploration.

@naruto-scifi-week
For Day 5 of @naruto-scifi-week, this chapter is for the prompt Artificial Intelligence! Gaara gets a headache, unlocks Lee’s tragic backstory, and makes a decidedly un-Sunan decision.

Summary:
Sunagakure is an outpost’s outpost, the most hidden of the hidden villages. Situated deep in the bowels of the planet Kaze, aptly named for the devastating windstorms caused by its thin atmosphere, the village is mostly nomadic. Under attack, the entire village can close off its tunnel structure and relocate in less than twenty-four hours, so long as the location of the Seed Bank isn’t discovered.
With Gaara as its leader and a code of strict cultural mores, the small underground society has survived, perhaps even thrived. But their safety and stability is put at risk when a ship crashes on the surface of Kaze. A ship whose crew claim to be the last known survivors of the long-abandoned planet Earth. And what the outsiders bring with them causes Gaara to question everything he’s ever known …

Summary: Yashamaru’s thoughts run like ghosts that walk through the backdoor in his head. They barge in unexpected, and unwanted. And the medicine— the medicine was only supposed to keep them quiet for a day. One day. Instead, it ended up burying himself so deep in his own head, that Anko has to find him again and bring him back.
Day 1: Exploration entry for @naruto-scifi-week Ship: YashaAnko Warnings: death mention, ptsd mention, biopolar mention, some vague mention of maybe human experimentation, suicidal ideations are sort of there, people generally have lots of problems in this fickinda trippy? Ish? I mean they’re mentions but they get like a sentence maybe s paragraph
“Sorry, it’s—“ He struggled to put the key in. The wrong key. Struggled to keep the crying baby from squirming in his arms. There was a large tote bag full of grocery items, a bruised apple peeking out from the top. He smiled at her, still trying to jam in the wrong key. “Give me a minute. I’m almost there.”
Anko looked at the man in front of her, at the memory in front of her.
No, not a memory. But a shadow of one.
“You’re not my Yashamaru.”
It stopped wiggling the door knob. The baby was still crying.
“I’m sorry— I can’t seem to get it in,” it smiled at her. That sort of sheepish smile Yashamaru got when he knows he’s in for a scolding.
But that wasn’t how that night went.
Anko held her supplies tightly and turned her gaze to the corridor that continued into the darkness. Keep going. I need to find him. She didn’t think the mirages would be that easy to ignore it— but she knew Yashamaru.
And she knew that evening like the back of her hand. He had dropped the apple when he climbed up the stairs, and it rolled all the way down her corridor like a soft hello. Hey, you dropped your produce— you okay? Yashamaru had all the bad hours of that day streaming down his cheeks, and the little smudge of baby barf on the white coat he forgot to take off. Sorry it’s— the twist of his lips, trying not to break down in front of a stranger. I’m fine— I’m so sorry for the noise—
“You’re leaving me,” it whispered with the all too familiar crack in his voice.
Anko stopped— her weight still in between a stride. “That’s low,” she hissed, holding her supplies tightly and grasping for the shape of a knife.
“But it’s true, isn’t it?”
Stay focused. An echo of an earlier conversation rang in her ears. You cannot get lost down there. If you enter the wrong room, we would lose both of you…
I won’t get lost. I’ll bring him back.
Anko continued forward and unto the next plane of Yashamaru’s mindscape.

“I found them.”
“Really? How?”
“Do you really want me to explain it to you?”
“…No. Keep your technical gabbling to yourself. Where are they?”
“All outlawed mutations are being transferred to the State Police Second Headquarters. The hunters will be guarding the convoy – we need to be careful.”
“Are they all scheduled for surgical alterations?”
“The eyes’ mutations for sure. I can’t say for the rest. What do you think?”
“They’re all bound to be mutilated, or killed.”
“You want to rescue the whole group? Naruto, we talked about this…”
“We can’t just let them all die! Sasuke won’t stand for it anyway. If we try to break him out, he will want to take the others with us. Hinata too.”
“We could just knock them out and be done with it…”
“You don’t really mean that.”
“…No, I don’t. Alright, let’s do this. It’s been a while since we got a raise on our reward anyway.”
“Yeah, we wouldn’t want the police to forget about us.”
Day 3 of @naruto-scifi-week, Outlaws and Bounty Hunters, and would be Neon Noir too if I actually wrote it lol. Will maybe tie into the Dystopian AU I’ll hopefully write for day 7.
My guess is that powerful families passed down genetic enhancement through the generations, until the governement decided they didn’t really like those people’s abilities and growing power. Sakura is a former slave - she was genetically modified to be a facotry worker, enhanced physically but very limited intellectually. The doctor who took her in illegaly gave her implants to help fix that. As for Naruto, he’s an immigrant, and thus a second-class citizen marked as such, with very limited rights.
They do crimes together.
And here’s a fic to go with it

“You don’t understand,” Sakura says, not for the first time. Her accent is not as polished as Ino’s. Sakura has risen out of Konoha’s lower spires on her own. Even if she hadn’t looked into the background of the apprentice of the famous Tsunade, Tenten would’ve been able to intuit Sakura is also not entirely comfortable in the higher levels of the ecumenopolis. Despite her clothing and attitude, she doesn’t seem to feel like she belongs. “The Hyuuga – no one in the galaxy messes with them. Not Iwa, not Kumo, and definitely no one in Konoha.”
“Not since the Massacre, at least,” Ino supplements cheerfully, and Tenten stifles a laugh at the expression on Sakura’s face.
“They don’t – they’re not –“ Sakura starts again, then stops herself. “They look straight into your soul, and that’s with their normal eyes.”
“Hinata is nice. A little too nice, maybe.” Ino pauses and takes a long drag of her straw until she empties her drink, then another one for good measure. The slurp is loud and unlike her, but there’s a hint of a sly smirk playing at the corners at her lips, that lingers even when Sakura stays silent (wisely, Tenten thinks.) “But really. There’s no way she would’ve left on her own.”
“Even though she’d have every reason to,” Sakura adds under her breath.
