Marcia Shulman: “Every line that somebody else would play like they were sad, Alyson was joyful about. It made her the only one for the role.”
That’s it. Like I absolutely could not see Regan successfully portray Willow’s repressed sadism beats pretty much because of this. Like what sounds dark and even cruel … wouldn’t come across as funny or endearing. It would come across as dark and cruel. Hannigan took a line of dialogue that was meant to be read one way and gave it so many more dimensions to the point where you could listen to it over and over again and pick up something new from it each time.
Which is, for me, what makes Willow so dynamic. That you can interpret her character multiple different ways and none of them are necessarily wrong or right. That’s just the realism of her character. She’s more than one thing. She represents more than one thing. She’s very multi-faceted and I just know Regan wouldn’t have been able to give Willow that depth. That really was all Hannigan. What she brought to the character out of the script she was given was more. And that’s what truly great actors do. Give you more out of their portrayal than what you get on the page.
Hannigan really just embodies everything Willow is.
I’m thinking of that iconic “I’m callous and strange” line in S3 and wondering how Regan would say that and shaking my head because I know it wouldn’t hit.
