So, what are your thoughts on Krueger and his backstory? Like, what are your headcanons and personality for him?

Well... this took me a while to write out. It's not edited, so don't mind the mistakes and the fact that Konig's name doesn't have the two dots above the O all the time. I'll come back and fix it later. Some of this came from some of my google docs and some I wrote into here on Tumblr.

Krueger’s in-game and Wiki bios say that he has the rank of corporal and joined the Bundeswehr under a fake name. After three years of serving there, he was inducted into the German KSK 4th Platoon. He then “allegedly” killed civilians and fled east, where he then joined Chimera in a long-term contract.

And that is all we have on Krueger and his military services… basically. However, you may now watch and be amazed as I use Google and logic to explain it in more detail to you on today’s episode of How Does That Work?

So, first of all, Krueger was born March 29th, 1985, in Austria. Where in Austria? We don’t actually know, so you can make up your headcanons on that like I have. Now, you do not get to be an Austrian citizen just by being born there; you need to have at least one parent who is a citizen of Austria. So at least one of Krueger’s parents is Austrian. His Wiki page does not give his parents the same last name, though. His mother goes by Doss, and his father goes by Krueger, whose last name he obviously took on. So, this can lead us to imagine that maybe his parents never married, or maybe they were and got divorced. There are so many things that you can imagine, and I have a lot of opinions on things. Or maybe people were just being weird and decided to list his mother’s maiden name… Who knows anymore?

So now, to figure out how he got his rank, we need to actually start to really dig into the German military because the Bundeswehr is part of the German military, not Austrian. Also the game literally says that he fled from Austria to Germany and joined the Bundeswehr there, so there is no room for confusion about what country that is part of.

So what is the Bundeswehr?

Well, "Bundeswehr" literally translates to "German Armed Forces," so... yeah... that's what the Bundeswehr is. They are the federal army of Germany, which means that they can only be deployed with approval by the Bundestag, which is the German government. (Phew, I’m learning politics to write this, people.)

Now, here we run into something interesting; nothing says what age he was when he joined, we only know why he joined. However, we can build up a pretty good picture of his age using logic, math, my calculator, and a lot of German military rules.

Krueger was born on March 29th, 1985.

Krueger was suspected of murder and fled to Germany to escape charges.

We know that Krueger served in the Bundeswehr for three years before being inducted into the KSK (which we will discuss in a bit).

In April of 2018, civilians were found dead with rounds matching Krueger’s gun, and thus he was taken into custody by the KSK.

Doing the math, or rather, making my trusty calculator do the math for me because I’m lazy and not good at math, we know that Krueger was taken into custody for allegedly killing civilians at the age of thirty-three… yeah, he’s no spring chicken, folks.

Now, there are some requirements to joining the Bundeswehr and the KSK, as there are for all militaries. Here is my list of the basic requirements to have to join the Bundeswehr:

You must be a German citizen as defined by Article 116 of the Basic Law (basically the German constitution).

You must be at least 17 years old with parental consent for minors (anyone under 18).

You must speak German at the B2 level or higher (in order to pass the tests and actually work).

You must take and pass a medical examination.

You must take and pass an aptitude/CAT test.

You must take and pass a physical fitness test.

You must attend a personal interview.

You must guarantee that you will support the free democratic basic order at all times (basically don’t turn against the government and the people).

Now, according to my research, foreigners can join the Bundeswehr, but it is really hard and based off of what I’ve read… There is absolutely no way that Krueger would have been able to join as a foreigner with his history. Also, he was on the run from authorities in Austria, and if he was caught, they’d ship him back there. So there is no way he’d even think of trying to join as a foreigner. So that means that in order to join the Bundeswehr, Krueger lied his way in, which we already know because his bios say that he joined under the fake identity of “Josef Doss”.

Now, keeping in mind that he was 33 when he was taken into custody, that he served in the Bundeswehr for three years before joining the KSK, and that you have to be at least 17 with parental consent to join, we can get a rough idea of how old he was when he joined them. Now, assuming that he joined the KSK in 2018, the same year that he allegedly killed civilians in, we can create our rough guess. He was somewhere between the ages of 18 and 30. Yeah… not very helpful, right? Well… we can better our guess by actually looking at his rank and his murder suspicions in Austria.

Looking at Krueger’s bios, I noticed that in the game it says “Austrian-born, fled to Germany to evade murder charges.” His bios also say that both of his parents are deceased. Putting two and two together, we can guess, though we don’t know for a fact, that Krueger murdered his parents and then fled to Germany from Austria to escape those charges. So he was an adult, definitely, by the time that he allegedly murdered his parents and then fled to Germany. I would guess that he wasn’t a teenager, so he was probably in his twenties when he joined.

Now, it is also incredibly hard to get into the KSK; you actually have to be handpicked and then pass really hard tests to get in. This implies that Krueger, who according to the game was only in the Bundeswehr for three years before joining the KSK, was either really, really good at what he did or he was good because he already had experience. That, or it’s just game logic, which probably is what makes the most sense when it comes to this next part.

Krueger was a corporal before he left the KSK (AKA fled because he allegedly killed civilians), and so we must now take a peek into the German military and what that means.

To become a corporal in the Bundeswehr, you must pass these requirements:

You must have served for 34 months (basically three years) or more, equivalent to the NATO rank of OR-4.

You must pass physical and mental suitability assessments (which I assume Krueger excelled in).

You must have a school diploma.

Now, I think this is actually pretty funny because being a German citizen meant you went to school in Germany. Since Krueger had a fake identity and was pretending to be German (because he never would have been able to sneak in even by faking that he was from another country with how thorough the background checks are), in order to become a corporal, he needed to have a German school diploma. So this man had to go and create a fake school diploma just so he could get an upgrade in his rank. This also makes me believe that he was in his twenties when he allegedly murdered his parents because he obviously knew what he was doing with all the forgeries, hacking, and contacts he would need to create the whole identity of Josef Doss.

This has led me to headcanon that this sly motherfucker was running around in the criminal world for a bit. Doing that, he would have learned a lot about guns and how things worked and also made the contact that he needed. Obviously something happened, and he slipped up and was accused of murder, causing him to flee to Germany, where he then joined the army. This man spent his twenties doing a lot of criminal shit, allegedly killed people (possibly his parents), and then went to Germany just to do more criminal stuff.

He’s crazy, I tell you.

Or maybe he was in the Austrian military too and learned stuff, but I feel like he would have been easily discovered as a fraud if he did that because they still have to do background checks, though lesser, and they would have found his picture in the Austrian military. So that makes me doubt that he ever served in the Austrian military.

So, in my mind, Krueger was definitely guilty of all the murders and did murder his parents too. He likes to remain mysterious, though, and no one actually knows if he did or didn’t. He is the only person who knows that it was him who killed the civilians in Mozambique, and he relishes in watching people try to figure out if it was him or not.
