new shoe success!
I squatted in my new shoes tonight, and it went pretty well. They feel good, though I think I may need to adjust my stance. My left knee was pulling in, so my coach suggested going a bit narrower next time. EXCITING DETAILS, I KNOW.
Class after work was 50 minutes of intervals on the rower and tabata madness. (Lots of push-ups, burpees, lunges, etc.)
Squats: 45x5, 65x5, 85x5, 110x5x3, 115x5x2
These went fine (aside from that knee issue), or as fine as week 1 of a new cycle usually goes for me. After a month of box squats, it feels strange to go back to free squats. Week 2 is always much easier despite heavier weight.
And then 4 sets of 8 stiff-legged deadlifts at 95 and 3 minute-long planks.
All this and 12K or so steps. Now I just need to lay off the breakfast sammies.
OK, time for meatloaf and roasted cabbage. Thanks for the dinner idea, Celeste!
Yeah. On point.
These are usually just lists of names, but today let's talk about why they're so awesome. (No, YOU'RE avoid work.)
Celeste: CrossFit, sass, Noah and my favorite idiot husband.
Imogen: Sex talk, Dream Hair and a riveting love life.
Jilda: Drool-worthy food, impressive workouts and quads for days.
Liz: The cutest pups, my favorite bored-at-work pictures and motivation to get off my ass.
James: Booze, music, books, tattoos, deep thoughts. Shall I go on?
Tori: Quality life musings, Dream Hair Part II and strong to boot.
Amanda: One of my favorite local friends! Tough lady with food pictures that may induce actual noises.
Theresa: Motivation galore! I mean, you're already following her, right?
Janie: Another favorite New York gal. Maker of glorious bacon salad, drinker of wine.
some things
It's raining, and my coffee was extra good today.
I weaseled my way into the best group chat (with some fine babes), and there isn't a better way to start the day than by talking about bacon, boobs and blisters. I didn't mean to alliterate. These things just work out sometimes.
I tend to hole up (aka hide) when I'm feeling down. When will I realize that isn't going to make anything better? It's not the best day for being outside (see above rain), but I think a walk to the library is in order.
Speaking of books, I'm reading "The Goldfinch." I'm not very far, but I'm really into it so far.
I have a tattoo consultation tomorrow afternoon. Finding a new person to put ink on your body is kind of nerve racking.
I really want to paint the ceiling in my bedroom black. But man, can you imagine what a pain the ass it would be 1. to paint and 2. to paint back over when we (eventually) move? Ugh.
Jilda challenged me to cook some five-ingredient meals. Feel free to throw out a couple suggestions for said ingredients. One or two to give me a base, if you please.
thursday things
Bench press tonight. Strength class is starting to feel comfortable. Not the weight. That sucks. I mean the people. Jokes and giving each other shit and all that fun stuff. It's nice.
Why didn't you tell me Tiger Balm burns so much, Jilda? I'm dying.
Work is picking up a bit. This is good news.
My Christmas decorations are still up. I think I'm in denial. Or lazy.
Hanging out in a clean house feels so good.
I'm in a terrible cycle where leftovers sound gross, but I don't want to cook every meal. Someone slap me.
Janie and Amanda are coming over on Saturday. We're going to eat soup. I'm excited.
I want to sneak off to a cabin, on an island somewhere perhaps, and hide for a while.
Why can't I just eat popcorn for every meal?
2014!
Well gosh - welcome, new followers! I assume y'all linked over from Liz's post at One Twenty Five, and I'm flattered. I haven't posted anything in a while because I was trying to be more balanced, and while I groan at the cliche of starting up in a new year, the prospect of getting to know you all and being a part of this community again is too tempting to pass up. So, let's do this.
Five quick things to bring everyone up to speed:
1. I'm on tumblr every day, staying updated on the ppl I follow while contributing nothing myself, lol. This'll change. Shoutouts to a few of my favs, though, in case you're looking for other women to follow:
Liz (obv)
Jilda - Crossfit and paleo and loveliness in the pacific northwest
Alex - Squatting heavy and taking the corporate world by storm
Kelton - This woman's writing brings me to tears
Teneshia - "Thick brick shithouse" are her words. Total inspiration.
Courtney - Powerlifting or Figure? Hmm, Both. + Science.
2. 2013 was a massive transition, and not an easy one. This time last year, I was self-employed, living with my best friend and (ex-)boyfriend, and traveling willy-nilly. I took a fulltime 9-5 gig heading up a consultancy's research department in April, moved out in June and then bought a condo in Toronto last month. The Google calendar that used to contain all my upcoming flight info now consists of mortgage payment reminders, but on the bright side, you guys should see my kitchen! It's gorgeous and increasingly filled with friends, wine and Mexican food. Which brings me to #3.
3. OMG Mexican food. Seriously. I can't get enough. I spent a week at a cooking school in Tepoztlan, Mexico this past November and it's my absolute go-to for everything from dinner parties to weeknight slowcooker meals. godo2point0 on instagram if you like food pics and gym selfies. Oh, right - the gym...
4. I lift. I maxed my deadlift at 275lbs before tweaking a dumb thing in my lower back in September, so I'm currently back at 135lbs and increasing by 10lbs per week as long as I don't feel any pain. A shitty hip problem and very long legs have made squats frustrating, but I can leg press 520lbs and barbell lunges are my default lower body exercise. Trying to be responsible and taking it one day at a time to prevent further injury, but less weight on the bar means fewer tacos and cupcakes. My goal is to maintain a balance that lets me live a happy life while looking, feeling and performing my best. NOT EASY, YOU GUYS. But we're all in this together :)
5. I don't know. I said there'd be five things... Feel free to drop a question in my Ask or tell me about you!
Hey dudes. I finally got around to doing the Perfect Imperfections video Angel tagged me in.
Basically, talk about three things you like about yourself and three things you don't. I tag Celeste, Sam, Jilda and Carolyn.
