Glam/Sebastian from Metal Family is NOT a good father.

I don't understand how the majority of the fandom continues to baby and pity Glam after watching this particular episode.

Seriously, just how do you all keep defending this man after watching this scene? What he did here was the textbook definition of bad parenting and emotional abuse!

I don't like the series in general because I considered it to be very poorly written. Glam is not a good person in my eyes, and he kind of reminds me of a certain not-so-nice individual that I used to know. I think Dee is a bad older brother and a very unlikable person, but he's a moody teenager at the end of the day. His insecurities possibly stem from the fact that he is being raised by a manipulative traumatized weirdo and a violent (wo)manchild with severe anger issues… but anyway, let's move on.

I watched the episode in the original Russian dub, and it's even worse in Russian than it is in English. How could you possibly demotivate your own freaking child in such a petty manner using such a tone? "You don't have musical skills, I know you'll fail, but I'll continue to prove that to you by constantly demotivating you throughout the process of being taught something you are clearly very passionate about in a very demeaning tone". The fans are quick to excuse and defend Glam by claiming that he's just mad at the fact that Dee wanted to master guitar in order to impress a girl he liked, which isn't good enough of a reason to assist his own child in mastering something he was interested in.

What a load of garbage.

How the hell is that a valid argument? Is Glam some sort of music guru? I don't understand. The fact that he continues to raise his voice at Dee shortly before telling him that his younger brother is more talented than him when it comes to music is just… horrible. This type of parenting is what causes sibling resentment and rivalry. This is not a normal or okay thing to tell to a teenager — let alone your own child!

Glam growing up in an abusive household does not excuse or justify his behavior with his own children. Being a survivor of abuse does not automatically grant you the pass to abuse other people who had nothing to do with you getting traumatized in the first place!

The fact that he finishes the whole thing by smiling at Dee after humiliating him by angrily telling him that his brother is more talented than him at something he was passionate about is just awful! At least Gustav was being honest about his abuse without sugarcoating it or trying to make it appear motivating. Glam's tendency to just do this to people while smirking at them the whole time is atrocious. And the fact that he tries to gaslight Dee as he leaves his cabinet by going, "oh, and by the way, I hope I didn't hurt your feelings, don't be angry at me!" is just… ugh…

Okay guys, give me your hot takes.

I'll go first: Lonnie Byers is the most mischaracterised character in the fandom. In nearly every fanfic he's an overt asshole who hurts his loved ones for sport. I don't think he's that simple, personally. For those who are working through their own traumatic childhoods and using him as a figurehead, I totally respect that! Don't let me stop you. Keep healing my friend. That said, for everyone else who just gets him so wrong: take another look. His abuse is quiet and complicated. No one seems shocked he was at the funeral. He comes back in the name of 'keeping the family together' and immediately gets Joyce drinking a depressant. He might push his kids around an 'acceptable' amount to make sure they're growing up strong and healthy. It's why he makes them hunt and kill, why he only nurtures their masculine interests (poor Will was doomed from the start). He still sets up a room for Will when he moves and lives out in the sticks, he's offended that the trunk of his car was checked. It's basically a given that he gets rowdy when he drinks too much, but I don't think it's nearly as drastic as people say. He abused the boys (and Joyce) physically and verbally, but emotionally is where he's truly a venomous person. He craves the validation, the idea of being the big protector... all he's protecting is his ego. Faux-manhood. I truly believe he may want to be better, he even alludes to that - but ultimately his own insecurity and self interest hurt him and everyone around him. He's horribly manipulative and a lot of fics seem to skip over that. I say all this as someone who had an abusive narcissistic father. I can forget the marks and the pain, but that kind of upbringing just damages your innate trust in people.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but no mentally ill person is capable of evil that you are not. We are capable of abusing others, yes, but so are you. Our capacity to hurt people is the same as yours because to abuse is to make a choice, it is not something out of your control.

Narcissistic abuse isn’t real because pwNPD are not capable of abusing others in a way that people without NPD are not. If you have been hurt by one of them, well you’re capable of doing the same things as them. You are not better than them just because you don’t have a certain condition. You may tell me ‘a narc will destroy you to your core’ but so will you.

And I have been hurt by someone with BPD. I should have kicked her to the curb sooner than I did. I shouldn’t have let her hurt me like that. But you know what? The things she did to hurt me? People in my past who didn’t have BPD did the same things to me. Why would I blame her disorder for what she did if it’s clear that she didn’t need it to make that happen? She chose to be like that.

You are working in the favor of your abusers by blaming their behavior on mental illnesses. You’re handing them a get out of jail free card on a silver platter. Worse, you’re burning vulnerable people who did nothing wrong at the same time. Don’t absolve your abuser of guilt. Acknowledge that they chose to be the way they did.
