how do you deal with the stress of balancing school with internship and having personal time? i feel like all my time is sucked up...
To be honest, it takes practice for most people, but it comes natural to me. I work a LOT better when I am busy- I feel better and I’m happier. I have had a job since I was 14.
I get up early and make coffee for myself, and look on websites for inspiration, and read the news or read a book. Then I get ready for work or school. When I get home I like to cook good food for myself and then study or do homework. SLEEP is so important.
My social life isn’t huge. I am not a huge partier, I just don’t feel good when I drink every night of the weekend. So I guess having more time to relax and less time drinking and doing my make up results in more time to clear my head and stay sane.
PR Intern Diaries :: Laura
I finally got my first placement! After a month and a half of working here, I am finally starting to see results. I am getting more outlets to respond to my pitches and requests and it is feeling great! It can be frustrating spending hours pouring over media outlets and names and lists, hoping that someone will be interested in your clients and ideas.When you start to see results for the first time, it is definitely gratifying. It only makes me want to work harder to find the best way to connect with editors and writers.
That being said, I know I definitely have a long way to go before I have real relationships with the people I am pitching, but it’s great to know I am making a start. Everyone starts somewhere! I also feel like I understand more about media in general, from things like Twitter to blogs and even magazines and newspapers. When I am out and around the town, I am noticing covers of magazines and looking at what they are covering and trying to understand them even better and how that information can translate to what I am doing at Media Maison.
In the first month or so of working here, I would wonder how the Account Execs and others in the office just knew people on my media lists and knew what they covered, but it’s becoming clearer to me now that I have been in contact with people multiple times. Starting out in PR, everyone else in the business would talk of their contacts like they have a special relationship with them and I’m finally seeing where they are coming from- it’s hard work getting people to respond to you, so once you are in good graces with an editor or writer, it is very important to keep them there. I’m hoping to keep building these relationships everyday and to be in the same place as the others in my office soon!

PR Intern Diaries :: Laura
One of the challenges of starting out in PR is that although I know major magazines, newspapers, and broadcasts from being a consumer, I don’t know every major outlet in every city. Media Maison is a national lifestyle firm so we deal with a lot of the national outlets that I know, but there are also plenty that I am not familiar with. This has been a challenge for me, making building lists more time consuming due to needing to look up multiple outlets before deciding whether or not to include them on a list, which makes pitching take longer than is necessary.
This week, we decided to target specific outlets from all of the top 10 cities in the country. By doing this exercise I have become not only more aware of the most popular outlets in other cities, but also which companies are owned or affiliated with others and who the contacts are at those places. This is helpful because it makes me more aware of what newspapers and news shows in radio and TV are popular and worth pitching. Also, it helps to know the top 10 cities in the country because that’s where most of the consumers are.
I’m glad that I’ve gotten to know more about outlets and where they rank in each of their respective cities. It will make list building in the future even easier, which will help with time management and using time more effectively.
