The aforementioned art by Caly @intheblanketfort.bsky.social is a beautiful illustration of Anne, Ed, Jack, and Mary. All are at least 10 years younger than we see them in Canon. They're naked, all cuddled together under a black blanket. Anne and Mary are looking towards each other, looking smug. Jack looks at the camera with a hand behind his head. Ed hugs the blanket to his chest, looking to the side with his hair fanned around him. End ID.]

My first fic for Disastercule Weekend is smut because that's all I've been brave enough to write so far 😅 but to be clear it's not specifically a NSFW or a romantic event. If people want to write gen fic, or explore platonic relationships between Ed, Jack, Anne, and Mary, or how they're rivals, that's welcome and encouraged!
For me the thing that's really exciting to me about this event is the opportunity to explore Ed's past without centering certain other characters, which tends to happen a lot. This is great news! I love Ed! I want to think about Ed at every age!
So if all you've been seeing about this event is about how they wouldn't be in a romantic or sexual relationship... okay! They don't have to be! You can explore how Ed and Anne and Mary met, or what Mary thinks about Jack, or do an Ed POV of Fun and Games where he reflects on what he does and doesn't have in common with Anne and Mary anymore.
The characters included here make this event fundamentally about Ed (to me). He didn't arrive in episode 3 a fully formed character. He lived a life to get there, and that life shaped him.
the whole "what if one of you grows while the other stops growing" thing david jenkins always brings up as a theme for s3. we should think about that more, that's something central to the themes of the whole show really, because it's there in the first two seasons also. maybe most obviously in 2x04, which is all about how love requires change: buttons changing for the sea, izzy realizing he will have to change if he wants to return the love the crew offers him, anne and mary finding the courage to change their life to renew their love, ed and stede choosing to have faith they can change to break out of their old pattern and get it right this time.
it's there in s1 too, mostly in jack. there's a strong implication that ed in his younger days was a lot more like jack than the ed we see during the show: he used to like drinking all day and biting the heads off turtles, and there's a part of him that still has fun with all that as something that happens once in a blue moon, but overall he's become a guy who wants something more out of life, and jack hasn't. ed grew up, and jack didn't. so 1x08 is one answer to that question djenks asked, and, well, you saw how things ended between ed and jack.
more controversially i think you can see izzy this way too. it's ambiguous in canon, i suspect probably deliberately, whether there was ever a time when ed and izzy's working relationship was really a healthy or positive thing to any degree (i have an opinion you can probably guess, and i can cite canon evidence that i think at least hints at it, but the show does avoid ever nailing anything down very firmly). but i think we have to assume at the very least that in the beginning that relationship was a lot less unhealthy than what we see during the course of the show. because that language about growth is exactly what izzy uses to describe it in his deathbed apology, that he spent years working to force ed into the blackbeard mold "even though i knew you'd outgrown him." there was a time when the whole blackbeard deal wasn't hurting ed, didn't feel as suffocating as it came to feel later, and at that point his relationship with izzy was probably, if not actually good, at least not anywhere near as actively toxic as it later became. but ed grew, and izzy didn't - not even just passively failed to grow the way jack did but understood what was happening and made an active choice not to.
this is something that makes me excited for s3, if we ever get it, especially now that djenks has hinted pretty strongly that stede is the one who's going to be challenged to grow, he's the one who needs to learn to communicate. because ed has this repeated pattern where he grows past important people in his life, over and over again, and before now they have always failed to grow with him. jack didn't see how ed was growing, izzy saw it and did everything he could to try to stop it. but now at long last ed finally has someone who will not try to trap him back there with him, someone who loves him enough to see how he's growing and respond to it by doing the hard work of growing to meet him because that's what a relationship takes.
my beautiful show give her back to me this isn't funny anymore
on the "artsy outsider" thing. i think people get hung up on taking the word artsy very literally here. david jenkins very often talks about piracy itself in the show like it's a metaphor for working in the arts, if only insofar as it's a workplace show and that's the kind of workplace he knows best. so it's like, blackbeard is the biggest rock star in the world but he's so tired of putting out the same album again and again, performing the same songs people want to hear at every show, and he's bored with the whole music industry because nobody ELSE is doing anything interesting either it's all corporate schlock, and then stede is this guy who's just decided to quit his high profile job and start a little garage band without actually knowing how to play music and the resulting debut album is perhaps not what you'd call actually good in any kind of objective sense, it's rough around the edges in a lot of ways, but it's still artistically interesting, it's the first really original thing ed's heard in years and he's immediately obsessed with how brilliant it is, etc. so i think djenks thinks of stede as kind of an outsider artist with respect to piracy and that's what mary's talking about, she's talking about the fellow pirates ed has been attracted to in the past and how they approached piracy.
now i know probably nobody reading this ever thought mary was talking about izzy but i will still point out that this rules out izzy even harder than the usual interpretation. some really dedicated blackhands shipper could and probably has put together an argument that "artsy" refers to izzy knowing how to sing or the fact that he whittled a shark one time or something. but it is undeniable that he is no kind of outsider artist when it comes to piracy, his whole thing is being a narrative representative of conventional by-the-book traditional piracy.
jack's interesting though. the main point of the line's what it says about stede, but from various comments djenks has made it's a safe bet he was thinking about ed's past with jack when he wrote this episode, so there's a decent chance he gave some thought to how it might apply to jack. we do not really know very much about jack's actual approach to piracy. but as much as he does represent a pretty mainstream view of pirate culture he's not like izzy - jack is playful, jack's capable of imagination, jack likes having fun; that's what ed likes about him. so it's entirely possible he brings that kind of attitude to piracy and likes to have fun with his raids, do something weird with it in some kind of way. jack's smarter than he looks and particularly good at social manipulation, so it's plausible he's into fuckeries of some sort, maybe even contributed to ed developing that approach. i'm sure any fuckeries jack's ever done are both bloodier and less elegant than ed's, but i do think they'd have pizzazz and that's what ed really appreciates.
as for anne & mary themselves we know their adventures involve slicing guys' faces off to wear as disguises and whatever you can say about that i would not call it unoriginal. so yeah i think ed's pretty into any pirate he thinks is doing something that's not completely boring out there. just something to think about when you're writing disastercule stuff or really any kind of ed backstory
in honor of the upcoming disastercule fic event i am posting some headcanons re: ed's past with jack, anne & mary. these are again headcanons, not serious meta; there's only a couple here that i would argue are even weakly implied by canon.
i am posting these ahead of disastercule weekend so you can use them as prompts or backstory if you like; you can credit me if you want but no need to
as teenagers on hornigold's ship ed and jack were real surprised to discover a big secret about their besties andrew and mark
ed eventually led a mutiny that left hornigold marooned on an island; in keeping with ed's normal pattern with his father figures, what triggered the mutiny was hornigold threatening at least one of (jack, anne, mary)
disastercule real but NOT in the sense of it ever being anything resembling a stable quad, more multiple separate non-monoagmous two-person couples that constantly cuck each other with someone else in the quad to prove a point or because it's funny and somehow they're all still friends, sort of, insofar as friends are a thing pirates have
jack really did save ed's life one time, on purpose and at some risk to himself. this was an impulsive split second decision that he absolutely would not have acted on if he'd stopped to think about it and he's spent the years since then constantly bringing it up to manipulate and guilt ed because that allows him to tell himself that's the only reason he did it. otherwise he'd have to admit to himself that he experienced an actual sincere emotion one time, which to jack is the worst possible fate
ed's ship is named queen anne's revenge because it used to be jack's ship but one day anne showed up telling him she'd just had a fight with jack and asked him to help her steal it, which he agreed to do because it was funny, and afterward she let ed keep the ship because she didn't really want it, she was just in it to make jack cry
when ed and jack have sex they usually flip a coin to decide who's bottoming. jack thinks he's always winning. ed is using a trick coin. they both get what they want.
jack normally refuses to bottom for women because he thinks that's actually gayer than having sex with a man. mary otoh normally only fucks men as a stone top. they have still had sex at least once.
part of jack's justification for this is that mary is nonbinary and jack is, surprisingly, despite being both a homophobe and a misogynist, not actually transphobic in the strict sense. he would express this in absolutely the most offensive way imaginable though and you'd have to dissect his sentences under a microscope for an hour before concluding the actual opinion he's expressing is somehow not transphobic
at some point post-canon jack turns back up from his looney tunes death and ed will have to try to explain his relationship with stede and set boundaries. you'd think this would be hard and, well, it's not exactly EASY, but the thing is jack's already been through something like this with anne and mary, who did eventually manage to explain the basic concept of romantic love to him, so once he gets it his reaction is along the lines of ok man i didn't know you were a girl that's lame but whatever. anyway you wanna get wasted
is there some deeply, deeply buried part of jack that feels just the faintest glimmer of envy at the knowledge that his oldest friends are all having a deeply fulfilling emotional experience that he himself is unwilling to ever make himself emotionally vulnerable enough to be capable of? jack sure doesn't know he's much too busy with yardies to think about that
at some later point jack starts hanging around the inn trying to seduce stede, which is confusing and irritating to everyone involved not only because stede obviously would have zero interest even if he weren't in the world's most disgustingly monogamous relationship but because even jack's heart really doesn't seem in it. gradually it becomes clear that jack is just clumsily trying to express that he has accepted stede into the disastercule in the only way he knows how. i try to steal your boyfriend, right, this is what we do? eddie? eddie are you paying attention? notice me eddie
that never has any chance of leading to any sort of sex for jack, obviously, but stede has a brief flash of finding it sort of weirdly touching when he figures it out, then hates that he had that reaction
alyssa lane's hc about jack eventually turning up postcanon in what superficially appears to be a stable serious relationship is real. his new gf? hellkat maggie
i'd like to thank everyone who worked so hard to publicize disastercule weekend and make it i think the most widely talked about rareship event ofmd fandom's ever had
