RWBY: Insight on Hazel
Okay. “Kuroyuri” just hit the RT website, and Ren and Nora’s backstory was revealed. Also, episode 11 will bring with it a fight with a Grimm that (judging by the shadows in the flashback scene) will be something really freaky-looking. Holy hell. But this doesn’t distract me from what else happened in this episode. Spoiler warning if you haven’t seen it yet.
Oscar is finally going to Haven. And the way he says it (“going to the city”) suggests that he doesn’t live as far away as we thought. When he tries to get a ticket, the machine doesn’t accept his payment. And then who comes waltzing in but Hazel, either on his way to meet Sienna Khan or on his way back. I think that Oscar is done for, but nothing happens. Hazel only breaks the machine (or at least dents it) and gives Oscar his ticket, then says something along the lines of “Are you going to let something so small get in the way of your goal?” Oscar’s like “I felt something...who was he?” and Ozpin’s like “Someone from my past.” Dun dun dun.
Now, this might not seem like a scene that means anything, but I think it revealed a lot on Hazel and quite possibly his backstory. At first, I thought Hazel was really nothing more than a quiet wall of brute force that Salem used to “enforce” her authority over people. Not really having much of an opinion, only obeying his leader like a servant should. But that little scene where he helped Oscar out made me think: what if he’s being forced?
What if Hazel’s family is being held hostage somewhere? What if Salem played one of the “if you help me I won’t kill them” cards? Though she doesn’t seem like the kind of person that would do that. But it would explain why he would help out a kid he doesn’t know.
Another thought is that he knew. He knew that that kid has Ozpin in his head but he did it anyway. Because he wants good to win. That way he’d be able to get his family back or something.
Or maybe I’m overthinking this and he just likes kids. I just want to spark a discussion. So what do you think?
