“Hey,” Sirius said in a soft whisper, grinning as Lily opened the door. “Congratulations!”
“Thank you,” she grinned, pulling him in for a hug. She looked beyond exhausted, her hair falling out of a clearly day-old bun, stains on her shirt and circles under her eyes, but she also looked more deliriously happy than Sirius had ever seen her. “Come in, boys!”
James, Remus, and Sirius all followed her inside the small flat, trying to be as quiet with their footsteps as possible.
“How’re you both feeling?” James murmured as they shucked their shoes and handed her the hot meals they’d brought.
“Tired,” Lily answered honestly. “But happy. Pandora’s napping now. I’m just–”
“Wait, but…who’s got the baby, then?” Remus interrupted, looking around nervously.
Lily laughed, walking towards the kitchen and placing the food on the counter. “Well, first of all, you can leave a baby alone if it’s sleeping. And second, she’s not alone. She’s with Regulus.”
The silence that followed was hesitant.
“Regulus?” Sirius repeated, raising his eyebrows dubiously. James, who was right next to him, sent him a warning look. But Sirius, who had known his brother much longer than James had been dating him, gave him a look right back. In Sirius’s opinion, Regulus babysitting could only end in screaming and blood-soaked carnage. “Maybe…maybe we should check on them!” he said in a high-pitched voice, trying to remain calm but failing miserably.
Lily laughed. “Alright, but I promise, he’s okay.”
Still, the four of them went into the sitting room.
When they arrived, however, Sirius found a scene he would have bet his entire Gringotts vault he’d never see in his life:
There, on the couch, was Regulus, a small baby cradled in his arms. He held the baby like she was the most precious thing he’d ever seen, his face truly soft, his voice a low, sweet rumble as he spoke to her, bouncing her occasionally to elicit sweet coos. His gaze was locked on her small form, and he was completely unaware of his audience as he continued:
“...and then you add the beetle eyes. And you must stir…clockwise, not counter-clockwise! Like this!” Grinning, Regulus twirled his finger over the baby’s head, his eyes lighting up when she kicked a bit, clearly reacting to his movements. “Yes, exactly! You know. And then simmer for three hours. One! Two! Th–”
He cut himself off, finally realizing the four adults were there, all staring at him. His face turned a bright shade of pink.
“What…the fuck?” Sirius asked, trying to decide if he was shocked or amused.
Regulus’s whole demeanor changed. “Fuck off,” he muttered, eyes narrowing, body curling inward, all softness leaving him in an instant.
Sirius, however, glanced over to James and instantly knew they were all in trouble. Because James was staring at Regulus like he was the literal stars, his eyes wide, full of adoration and yearning.
He wondered how long it would be before they visited Regulus and James at their flat to deliver them meals and see their child….
The idea didn’t displease him.
