Rodya's dad would have been named Roman! In Russian, the patronymic is made by adding "-ovich," "-evich" or "-ich" to your father's first name, for men, and "-ovna," "-evna," or "-ichna" for women. The different endings depend on what the last letter of the name is ("-ich" and "-ichna" if it ends in a vowel). For example, my name in Russian is Fyodor Larrich (my dad's name is Larry). So since Romanovich/Romanovna has a V, their dad's name was Roman! Hope that helps.

a football team i follow has an icelandic player who just got picked for the icelandic team (yay), and they had the full lineup listed and the amount of "wow everyone's name ends in son!" comments is... remarkable... there's one person very patiently explaining to them all about patronyms... how does this happen everytime anything to do with iceland hits the news, i'm so sorry?? like it would be great if people could actually pay attention to the actual news at hand?

It’s okay! It’s kind of fun having a really prominent and normalized cultural thing that’s baffling and alien to foreigners. I don’t expect random internet commenters to magically know all about Icelandic names. The actual news outlets should do their research, though.

(Family names are totally baffling and alien, though. I was so confused by The Simpsons as a kid. I figured since Homer’s name was Homer Simpson his father was named Simpur, but then his son Bart was also Simpson! What! I interrogated my mom about this and she told me maybe one of their ancestors’ name had been Simpur, which explained nothing and only confused me further.)

So weird seeing the international press talking about Icelandic politicians. They keep calling our prime minister “Gunnlaugsson”. And then they go on to discuss “Sigurðardóttir” and “Sigfússon” criticizing him and I need to stop a moment to mentally decode who they even mean. THIS IS NOT HOW ICELANDIC NAMES WORK, GUYS. It’s exactly as weird as it would be to insistently refer to you as your father’s son or daughter instead of your actual name, except that we’re all used to foreigners cluelessly doing it all the time and have for some reason just silently given up on correcting them.

To its credit, Wikipedia actually does this correctly and has a note on top of every page about Icelanders explaining the proper nomenclature: “This is an Icelandic name. The last name is a patronymic, not a family name; this person is properly referred to by the given name Sigmundur Davíð.” If only respected international publications would live up to the same standard as Wikipedia.

(Yes, we call all our politicians by first names, it is normal, I know it sounds weird and inappropriately informal to you but I swear that’s how we do it and no Icelander in the history of ever would call him just Gunnlaugsson under any possible circumstance. You can use his full name (yes, it’s long; deal with it) but not just Gunnlaugsson.)

it was so bad I was there with three people who speak French fluently and I came out like ‘so that was a weird film. what exactly was happening anyway?’ - but then again it was in like… 2008 I think

well the movie came out in 2010 so it probably wans't in 2008 ahah but yeah It's already hard enough to understand in a language you're fluent in so !!

fun fact the first time I ever watched Inception was in French!! and I remember I was so proud bc I understood the scene where Ariadne talks to Mol even though I couldn’t understand the rest of the movie wooooo
