heyyyy phannies remember how in 2023 or 2024 there was a marginal improvement in you guys captioning/transcribing the audio/video content you posted because i was so relentlessly annoying about it? wouldn’t it be like sooooo fun if you guys started doing that again?? but without me having to use all my time and energy to comment on every single uncaptioned post because accessibility shouldn’t be dependent on whether a disabled person is calling you out after the fact?? and the deaf and hard of hearing people that were making those requests haven’t suddenly disappeared or magically become hearing?? wouldn’t that just be the funnest thing in the world 😝🤣🥳😃🤪🤩😋
anyway if you want tools or tips for captioning i have made numerous posts about it over the years. you can search #phaccessibility on my account. anti also has resources for accessibility on @dnp-described that you can find.
and shout out to loves of my life @dnp-described the blog most dedicated to spreading accessibility in this community and @littleroomba my cophounder of the phouncil of deaph phannies 🤟
"autocaptions are good enough they're like 99% accurate" so true dnp are always saying shit like this /s
to be very clear, this is not what they said! THIS is what they said:
P: No, not "adieu"!
D: I like to kick off every single Wordle with "adieu".
dan and phil primarily use received pronunciation (RP) which is standard british english. words that have "dew" in them are not pronounced /du/ (aka doo) like in american english, but pronounced like /dʒu/ (aka jew) (the word "do" is pronounced /du/ the same as in american english, so the words "do" and "dew" are differentiable in RP), so any time dnp say "due", "dew", "adieu", or anything else with that sound, autocaptions comes up with something antisemitic.
autocaptions do not account for dialect and accent variations!
maybe when disabled people tell you what kind of accommodations they need your response shouldn't be "can't you just [shitty alternative]?" and should be "ok how can i help make this happen?"
phannies any time i reblog a post of yours with captions or a transcript or an image description or any other accessibility feature know that i’m kissing you on the mouth and also we’re in love
when you’re giggling and kicking your feet watching any dan and phil video and then one of them says something disgusting about balls or cum or butt sex 💔
see this is why we need captions they capture my feelings on this look/posing perfectly
if anyone wants to watch the tit stream but can’t afford tickets dm me. i’ll be streaming it over google meet because the tickets with the afterparty total to over $25 USD not the “reasonable” $15 USD they advertised.
please take me up on this offer. it’s the only way i’ll be able to stomach the fact that i spent over $25 on a livestream that i know won’t even be captioned properly/accessible.
(also maybe other people have offered this—i have been out of the phannie tumblr loop the past couple weeks)
edit: google meet now limits meetings with more than two people to 30-45 mins (i forget which) so we’ll be moving to discord!
continuing from my previous post, i do want to say that my favourite thing about phannies is how much we genuinely want to be and do good. @phandomgives is a perfect example of this. as is the amount of money we raised through the pcrf birthday streams. we want to help.
it’s disheartening how often disabled people get left out and forgotten about, especially considering there are so many disabled people in the phandom. i will say though that every time i have ever talked about accessibility in this community i have been met with nothing but kind responses and open mindedness. although that should be the bare minimum, disabled people know how rare it is to encounter that. and it’s not something i take for granted.
the problem is, as genuine as i believe you all are when you say you’ll do better about accessibility, the motivation to do so more often than not fizzles out pretty quickly and there isn’t lasting commitment. and i know it’s partly because so many of us have adhd lmao.
but the point of this post is just to say i love you guys and i love being part of a community that has so many people with a genuine desire for the world to be a better safer place. let’s never lose that.
