ok but what if achilles looked slightly like phocus cuz their mothers were both nereids. Like imagine youre peleus and you were finally able to leave your past with your family behind but the moment you actually start your own it’s like they’ve come back to haunt you

then imagine having this kid handed to you who was exiled for killing someone close to him and seeing him in you. Imagine watching this foil of yourself grow closer to who looked like the reincarnation of the brother you killed all those years ago and hoping that the same story doesn’t play out again

I love the pieces of information about Aeacus's family from Pausanias

Apparently Pausanias knew a version of the Neoptolemus death myth where Pylades helps Orestes kill the evil ginger abomination grandson of his great-grandfather's murderer.

And Pausanias also believes Pylades avenged his great-grandfather in the process, neat!

Endeïs is very much alive here, and like Hippodamia of Pisa, seems to have actively encouraged her sons to kill their half-brother.

I prefer the idea that Phocus is illegitimate, due to Aeacus having an explicitly alive wife (it also adds a personal touch of bitterness to Telamon's treatment of his own bastard Teucer due to him feeling inferior to a bastard, who Aeacus loved more than he loved his legitimate sons) and also because

Pausanias mentions the myth of Phocus setting off from Aegina to found his own Kingdom a couple times, which came to be known as Phocis after him and was ruled by his descendants

If he was a firstborn legitimate son, wouldn't it make sense if he was the heir to Aegina? He was even the son of a Goddess on top of his father favoring him to his half-brothers.

It's hard to see Phocus as older, him founding his own place as well as making a family of his own away from Aegina makes me think he was trying to avoid the Chrysippus/Pelops vs Hippodamia/Atreus/Thyestes situation that his family was starting to resemble.

It's a shame that Telamon and Peleus killed a guy who showed no signs of competing in a power struggle with them. He probably only came back to Aegina temporarily to visit his father.

Before I wrap this up, here's one last passage (Telamon unsurprisingly still sucks)...
