PERCY JACKSON SEASON 2 EPISODE 5 BECAUSE WE WERE FED AND DEPRIVED AT THE SAME TIME (part two and lmao i forgot abt this rant tmr ep 6 is coming)
deprived (my criticisms basically cuz my opinion matters sooo much 😋):
siren scene. nope. i understand some good things about it yeah, and it's not bad, but the issue is that the book one is just better.
annabeth willingly wanting to face the sirens is a huge part of her character. her wanting to know so badly what she would see when near sirens to the point that she would take such a massive risk, and the confidence in her plan that she has thought of everything and thus will definitely survive till it's over— the perfect blend of curiosity and pride, it is literally one of the core parts of annabeth. not to mention the trust she puts in percy, that if anything goes wrong, if her plan somehow doesn't work, percy will save her. put as many percabeth moments you want, but this decision was integral.
changing her vision also makes no sense. annabeth's relationship with her father is so important (they literally take his help in the next book) and there has been no mention of it. who did she go back home to? why are things bad with her father? why does camp mean so much? why did she run away? we don't get anything about her father. book-annabeth strived for her mother's love too, for multiple reasons, but one of them was that when the human part of her life (her dad) rejected her, she was taken in by the demigod part, and her mother is in it. there was no reason to remove her father and make it solely focused on athena, in fact, it makes it worse.
why add percy and grover? luke being there in the vision showed how much she loved him and cared for him, and that she wanted nothing more than for him to see the right side, and while the show also showed that, there was no reason to put percy and grover there? although i guess it is that the vision was her outsmarting the sirens, so the grover-luke-percy thing is fake and she "made it up" (or thought she did), but then that removes an important part of her relationship with luke, which also makes no sense.
HER LOVE FOR ARCHITECTURE. WHERE IS IT. If I'm recalling correctly, I don't think they mentioned it in S1 either (i could be wrong)? regardless, annabeth's love for architecture and designing and combining it with hubris is so much more meaningful than her being the only one to outsmart the sirens. the show completely disregards her passion for architecture while simultaneously watering down the reveal of her fatal flaw.
and lastly, THE BUBBLE. WHERE IS THE BUBBLE. THE GOSSIPING FISHES. PERCY HOLDING ANNABETH AS SHE CRIES. Again, I love the whole "we saved each other thing" but this simple gesture was so much more. The worst part is that they could've very easily kept the siren scene same exactly and also put in the "we saved each other" scene and it would've worked very well.
i don't know if there are any other problems i had, with this episode in specific, cuz the siren scene just. ruins tf outta the stuff i liked. i know it's an adaptation, but this is not how you do adaptation.
