the thing that's obvious to all of us but i hope is made clear for non-bylers is that this wasn't just a niche online community getting over-excited about a non-canon ship. it wasn't like a lot of instances of queerbaiting where the writers saw interest and started capitalizing off of it later. sure, there were always early season bylers, but i honestly don't think anyone was taking it to the point of serious theorizing until season four came out and the show itself made that plotline explicit. THEY were the ones who made will in love with mike, THEY were the ones who made his entire purpose in season four reuniting mike and el via his gay feelings, THEY were they ones who left that plotline vague and open ended and THEY were they ones who carried it onto season five instead of abandoning it like they should have if they were never going to give it resolution. yeah a lot of the theories were reaches but ultimately they waved a meaningful queer storyline in front of us like a carrot on a stick and laughed when we tried to bite it.
