Announcing the Byler Big Bang 2026!

As we’ve already mentioned there will be a Byler Big Bang 2026, but since this is our fifth year hosting this event, we’ve decided to turn things a little…upside down: Instead of a normal big bang, we’ll be hosting the event in the style of a reverse big bang!

What does that mean?

A reverse big bang runs mostly like a normal big bang. Writers and artists are paired up to create corresponding fics and artworks, which they then post on a designated date during the posting period. The main difference: During a reverse big bang the artists get to choose what to draw, while the writers have their pick from the art ideas presented to them by the artists. 

This also means a slight change in schedule. While we normally wait until halfway through the event to pair up our teams, this time around claims will happen as soon as the sign up period closes to give writers as much time to work on their fics as possible.

When is the sign up period? 

General sign ups open on June 18th and close on July 17th. Writers get to sign up for a few more days while artists send in their ideas and we prepare everything for claims. Our posting period will be in November this time around—but you can expect a more detailed schedule with the post announcing that sign ups are now open.

you ask a boy to be your friends on the swings because he’s alone. you fall in love with magic together. as you grow up you get 2 more best friends but he still always looks to you first. they whisper about him around town and kids are mean to him and you don’t really understand why but you swear to always protect him. when you’re 12 he goes missing and you feel like you’re the only one who really cares. magic was real all along but it took him from you. you watch his lifeless body get pulled out of a lake and you insist it’s not him because it just can’t, it can’t be. you look at his drawings that you keep in a binder and try to hold it together. you go to his funeral. he lives and when you visit him in the hospital you put your head on his chest so you can hear his heartbeat. a year later and he’s acting weird and you notice before everyone else. you pull him out of visions and bring him “home” and it’s the basement you’ve been playing games in your whole life. you barge into his house and sleep at his bedside. he gets possessed and the only part of him that isn’t is the hand you held. then you grow up and things get messy and hormonal and you’re mean and angry and you don’t know how to manage your relationships and you hurt people because of it. 4 years later and you watch him unlock the powers you believed he had all along and use them to save you. you don’t know that he thought about that very first day on the swings while he did it.

remember the time they used an interpolation of OST track "the first lie" which was always used as a a love theme in the OST track "being different" which was used during will's van scene monologue except the melody was incomplete to demonstrate how the story was incomplete because it was a lie and mike didn't know the truth and it was all so unfinshed between them remember when they did all that

Mods Wanted!

Hi, fellow Bylers! We're currently preparing for the 2026 edition of the Byler Big Bang, a fanwork challenge in which writers and artists work together to create fanfics and corresponding artwork. It's always a lot of fun and the community that comes together around the event is incredibly lovely, but we're in need of a bit of help to make sure this year's event runs smoothly! This mainly includes people to help us manage the discord server for the challenge. We're also thinking about reactivating our Twitter presence, so if anyone is interested in helping with that, please let us know!

Applications are open to anyone, regardless of whether you've participated in the challenge before, as long as you're excited about the fandom and the challenge! You also don't need to consider participating in order to help run the challenge (inversly you also aren't barred from participating by being a mod).

i feel like an often overlooked downside to 10-episode seasons and the death of the "monster of the week" format is that we get way less whump variety nowadays. used to be that there'd be dozens of opportunities for your fave to get punched or kidnapped or hypnotized or what have you. these days if it doesn't fit into the main plot, it just doesn't happen. this is a tragedy. we should be protesting.
