We do a lot of work and get paid very little, despite teaching university classes and doing research on the very frontiers of our fields (I have to prove my thesis is new, useful work before they’ll give me a PhD). Both of these are huge sources of revenue for universities, and we don’t see enough of that.
I know grad students who live in their cars, skip meals for money, and put off necessary medical costs.
