What is the difference between venir and provenir? Are they synonyms? In what contexts is it appropriate to use one or the other?
Hello thanks for the question.
They are synonyms to a degree. Venir is your everyday common use of the verb to come. It means to come over, come home, or come from (person or thing) etc.
However, provenir is used for saying the origin of something, or in other words, where something comes from or where its roots are found. This word is used a lot when talking about langauges, civilizations, history, etc. This is a great word to use in a spanish essay.
No se sabe de dónde provenía la civilización Maya. - Nobody knows the origins of the Mayan civilization.
El español proviene del latín - Spanish comes from/has its origins in Latin.
Mi madre viene a mi casa para cenar - My mom comes to my place to eat dinner.
¿De dónde vino este pájaro? - Where'd this bird come from? (Where did it appear from)
Hope this helps!
