I will show no attempt to hide my love for the monster that is the Pukei Pukei. Our current residential Pukei is an 8 months old and was rescued from a household where someone had purchased it as a pet for their young daughter. The Pukei was beaten and thrown out after smacking the child with its tongue because it coveted the apple the child had been teasing it with. Authorities involved, Guild members stepped in and thus we now have “Lapulee” living with us as possibly a lifetime rescue. Lapulee was raised by humans from an egg so we can’t say what effects that will have long time on any rehabilitation attempts that are done. As a result of the beatdown it received from a human he was initially terrified of leaving his crate and didn’t eat for 48 hours; only giving in after another 16 where I sat next to the crate with a bowl of cherries and a cup of water for him to drink from. So, with that all said... Pukei Pukei are very gluttonous and will attempt to eat anything and everything regardless of whether they should or not - this includes but is not limited to: scatter nuts, adamant nuts, mighty nuts, flashbugs, stuffed and mounted rhino beetles, butterfly studies. Books (especially if they see any pages with fruit or nuts on them), research papers, visual studies, paintings and possibly one of my socks. Despite their appetite however they’re not outwardly that harmful to anything nor anyone unless they come under threat, that said - they can be known to bully smaller monsters purely so there is more for them to eat alone. If you feed a Pukei Pukei you might as well submit to the fact you now have a very hungry and affectionate friend for the rest of your life. They will nuzzle, lick and cuddle with whoever feeds them, and will actively make a nuisance of themselves if they think it will lead to more food. I have woken up many a time in the night to find that our resident Lapulee has broken free of his pen so he can sit on my chest and lick my nose until I get up to feed him. These monsters are extremely food motivated. They are also incredibly fucking stupid. As mentioned before - our interactions with juvenile Pukeis such as Lapulee has led to many losses in research documents, books and pictures, and the like. Things that are completely inedible may be eaten by a Pukei if it believes what it sees to be the real thing. They also run into mirrors and get angry at their own reflections. I will keep everyone up to date with the status of Lapulee, and whether or not he is truly incapable of being released into the wild, for now however: I will just sit here and admit that the vegetable section of my garden is lost. - Leo Briarworth
