What a good lift.
Live Reaction:
Memoir of Rati and the continued themes of eschewing the trappings of class and the influence of the West being tied to the acceptance and reverence in a queer relationship hits on so many levels.
The show is really doing such a lovely job of showing both Thee and Dech crossing the boundaries of propriety in expected of their station in favor of a more egalitarian world alongside the pursuit of their chosen man.
Both pairs also engage in work alongside each other. Dech helping Mek at the grocers when he’s struggling to hear and spending the day doing something his father specifically considers servant work, to both spend time with and protect Mek. And while Mek resists Dech doing this work with him, it’s fully supported by the grocer. Thee and Rati, dressed in traditional clothes, harvest essential Thai herbs from Mae Buaphan’s garden: basil and lemongrass. There is an understanding in the narrative that there is an effort that is involved in love, and a work. An importance of being evenly yoked to move forward. Mae Buaphan also accepts Thee and Rati after they’ve engaged in their work in the garden.
The choice to include the shifts in level of intimacy for both under mosquito nets in traditional beds that belong to Rati and Mek, while dressed in more traditional common clothes. Mek and Dech engage in an escalation of intimacy after Mek sleepily reaches out to stroke Dech’s cheek and immediately pretends to be asleep upon realizing what he’s done. But it’s Dech that crosses the line into biting followed by peck kissing first and after Mek responds in kind, saying theyre even, it’s Dech that initiates the first deep kiss.
Meanwhile, Thee and Rati also play a level of mirrored actions in their scene in Rati’s bed in the house of his mother’s, in turning toward, then away and toward, before the soft exchange of putting each others fingers in their mouths (it’s so soft and intimate here as well)
And again this sense of reciprocity and being evenly yolked a pair weaves into these scenes., in character appropriate ways. My Rati is a pillow princess but he doesn’t rise his hands off of Thee and encourages him further.
The contrast to Rati playing with Prince Mai, and needing to be tutored, rather than the shared work alongside the paired couples, as well as the preview that shows the reality of when the aristocratic families become aware of what their sons have been up to…
I love this show.
I don't know what to do after binge watching Memoir of Rati.
I am stuck in it, I can't move on. I don't feel watching any new series. I can't find the soft consenting bl drama. I can't find anything similar to The Untamed and memoir of Rati.
I know some bls are soft , but the asthetics of old historical houses, and the soft way of speaking without using curse words , my soul is craving for that.
I am feeling hungry and there is nothing I can watch right now.
