I was thinking about this the other day...attempted to capture the difference between these kinds of friendships. I think what I came up with is the closer you get the more, obnoxious, casual and honest you are with each other- tbh I wouldn’t want it any other way.

There’s just something about the emotionally damaged and closed off character who thinks that they’re a failure and their work is the only reason they should keep living mentoring a younger ray-of-sunshine character that looks up to their slightly troubled mentor and brings light into their friend’s life, only for the ray-of-sunshine character to die and the mentor lives on and continues to make the world a better place, because even though they want to die that’s not what they promised their surrogate child.
