retinal detachment in cat
Retinal detachment can be caused by many things. High blood pressure (can be induced by Hyperthyroid, Kidney disease....for example), Trauma, glaucoma, uncontrolled retinal hemorrhage for whatever reason... for example. It causes the cat to suddenly go blind. Owners might present the cat with complaint of “keep walking into walls”.
But the most common ones that I see are found to have high blood pressure with chronic kidney disease or hyperthyroid or both. There is always something going on that caused the cat to have retinal detachment. Palpate the neck, Perform blood check, don’t forget to include Total T4.
This cat has ridiculously high blood pressure. Over 250 mmHg. (normal value 120-140, if stress i can forgive 160... but over 200? that’s not good.)
Treat the blood pressure, and find the underlying cause, then treat the underlying cause.
Prognosis for the vision is poor. There is a small chance that the retina might reattach once the blood pressure is no longer high. But most likely, the vision won’t return.
Even tho the hope to save the vision is very low, we still gotta treat that high blood pressure or the next thing that’s gonna explode would be some blood vessel in the brain.
