okay nyx rant time!!!!!!! because i am done with people who wear glasses and just casually call themselves “visually impaired” like it’s some aesthetic or personality trait. no. just no. you are not visually impaired because you have to wear glasses. full fucking stop. it’s disrespectful, it’s ignorant, and honestly, it’s exhausting to keep having to explain this to people who won’t listen.
i have actual low vision. i’m talking about a condition that doesn’t just mean “i need glasses to see clearly.” i’ve had multiple surgeries, i wear glasses, and even with all that, my vision is still seriously fucked. my peripheral vision? barely exists. i can’t see shit to the sides, which means walking through a crowded hallway feels like navigating a goddamn obstacle course blindfolded. that’s not a cute disability to claim when you can’t read the board without your specs. that’s real, that’s daily, and it’s brutal.
glasses are a tool, a fix to help you see better, but they don’t magically cure vision problems or erase disabilities. meanwhile, people like me have to deal with constant strain, headaches, fatigue, and the constant anxiety of not being able to see what’s around us — sometimes even danger. and yet, you out here saying you’re visually impaired because you can’t see without your fancy frames? that’s a slap in the face to everyone who’s fought through real vision loss.
this isn’t just about “i can’t see well.” it’s about living with a disability that impacts your independence, your safety, and your quality of life. when able-bodied people co-opt these terms, it minimizes those struggles and turns actual disabilities into a joke or a fashion statement. it makes it harder for people who genuinely need accommodations or empathy to get it because the term gets diluted and mocked.
imagine if someone with a bunch of earwax in their ears said "i'm hard of hearing because i have earwax in my ears". sounds ridiculous, right? well, that’s exactly what’s happening here. it’s disrespectful and lazy. so please, if you wear glasses, that’s fine, but don’t claim a disability you don’t have. it’s not cute, it’s not quirky, it’s not edgy. it’s disrespectful.
real visually impaired people have earned that label through pain, struggle, and adapting to a world that’s not built for us. show some damn respect. if you want to be an ally, listen to us, amplify our voices, and stop treating disability like a trend.
i’m angry because this ignorance erases real experiences and makes fighting for accessibility even harder. so stop. just stop.
