My memory about to be tested tomorrow 🙏
Man. So I head back into the office three days a week. I'm happy it's hybrid, but I don't wanna go. (insert toddler tantrum)
But I must. Dammit.
On the bright side, maybe it will curb my dependency on chocolate. Don't bring it to the office, can't eat it. Unlike at home where I keep buying it thinking I'll have the self control.
Looking for the silver lining people. :P
Why is the government so keen to get people back into physical offices?
Given, in Leicester, the increase in cases was linked to both workplaces and schools, it seems like an odd choice.
People working from home has lots of benefits, not just suppression of the virus, but environmental (due to the reduction in communing) and for people's well-being as well.
Yes, there's the loss of the "commuter economy" - people no longer buying a sandwich at pret or whatever, but is that such a big deal? Is it really worth the risks of trying to push people back into physical offices?
Or is there something else going on?
Is it to do with persuading people that coronavirus is "over" and our lives can go back to some semblance of normal?
The other idea that's bouncing around my head is that commuting tags an hour, two, or even more on to many people's work days. There's a lot said about how the 8 hour workday is too long for peak productivity, and partly functions as a tool of repression (because workers don't have enough spare time or energy) and also perhaps drives up spending (because workers don't have enough spare time and energy). If you add on a commute, that increases the time effectively spent "working" and reduces the time people can spend on activism (in the broadest sense) and increases their need to buy convenience items.
Is it possible that the government sees working from home becoming the new normal as actively dangerous?
My desk. Currently working from Home but these guys gonna make the journey back into the Office with me on Thursday. May the force me with me as I simply walk back into Mordor...
Baby Brain?
People have the audacity to act as if women who have had children are second class citizens suffering from ‘baby brain’, barely fit to re-enter the workplace (if they wish to). If baby brain exists, it’s a SUPERPOWER 🦸🏻♀️
Having a child makes you blindingly good at multi tasking, prioritisation, operating on very little sleep, money management, research skills, project management, planning and organisation. Also, pretty darned fit because you’re constantly running around after your offspring, lifting them, soothing them and walking or rocking them to sleep. You also walk extremely fast because children take hours to herd out the door- maybe we should add ‘working to deadlines under time pressure’ to that list.
Parenting requires perseverance, determination, kindness, first aid skills, event planning, nutritional knowledge, chef skills, time management, the ability to work as a physical trainer/yogi/masseuse/mindfulness educator/life coach, counselling skills, the ability to find educational opportunities in everything you do- and the patience of a saint!
So basically being a mum makes you super human. And we have the audacity to ask for some flexibility in the workplace! Too right we do. Because we’re your greatest asset 👊🏼
Just a little update
Sorry for the radio silence recently, I’ve just not had anything to report. I’m still waiting on a date for my take-down, and even though I’m meant to be seeing my GI Tuesday afternoon, because of work, I need to move the appointment. It kind of feels like they want to wait until after Christmas but I would prefer it to be over as soon as possible. I’m getting frustrated with it and my bag and stoma cause a bit of anxiety because I’m having to wait.
I’m back to full-time now at work which has been going fine. My new manager (who started about two weeks before I went off for surgery in June) seems to e getting the hang of how our team works and our two newest colleagues are doing well which has made the atmosphere a lot less stressful and bitchy. This has helped me get back into the swing of things but I think because I know I’m going to be off again soon, I don’t want to get too comfortable. Despite having worked there for over four years now, I still feel like I need to prove my abilities to everyone because I have had so much time off. And I still feel this sometimes even after my manager explained how much he valued me as a member of the team. I’m sure it’ll all settle down once I’ve had my take down and have returned to work again, I just can’t help but feel a little inferior sometimes.
Had a great Father's Day BBQ with my fiance and both sets of parents. I've been pretty tired today (probably from going back to work this week) but I had a good day anyway. Also, I got loads of cuddles with Button who is pointedly ignoring me in this picture.
