this being on my mind is coupled with the fact that i recently read christopher isherwood's memoir (which heavily involves real-time observation of the nazi party's rise to power in the 30s) but i think truly one of the most genius parts of succession is its portrayal of not just fascism itself but how people respond to it. how attractive they find it, even when they don't want to or don't think they do, which is part of what makes it so dangerous. safe room in particular weaves such a thorough web of those players it makes me go crazy even after 5+ watches.

you've got tom and shiv talking in the car about ravenhead's controversy - tom speaking as someone who primarily wants to maintain his own job and his status and therefore will appease any and all of those above him, so he's caught between the fact that ravenhead brings in revenue and the fact that his wife is standing her ground on the moral convictions. of course shiv has the privilege to act based entirely on her moral beliefs because unlike tom, she doesn't stand to lose anything by being vocally anti-fascist. after leaving that car and entering the world, shiv proceeds to talk about Cleaning Up (in a way that ironically feels reminiscent of mencken talking about Something Clean) and tom is made to be the one to go and "turn ravenhead's guts out" and decide whether he's a fascist or not. truly, he's meant to decide just how bad of a fascist he is. if he's so bad that he has to go or if they can maintain plausible deniability. and there tom expresses a very clear condemnation and unease about nazis and their actions... while also, in an earlier scene, engaging in an undeniably fascist display of masculinity and homoerotic domination. notably not that enthusiastically, though. it's almost like an experiment, a brief play at the kind of power that it's clear logan exudes. (i likely don't have to tell you that it evokes the very same suffering tom was put through in the prior episode.)

and what logan exudes is genuine fascist leadership, which is shown to be deeply attractive even to rhea jarrell, who's meant to be a representative of the True and Good. she shivers as she shakes logan's hand. she tells him to fuck off with his acquisition bid, but she's smiling. logan believes that what makes ATN better is that they don't "sell" people on anything, they don't tell them how to feel and don't coach anyone on political correctness, and therefore it's them and their politics that are the honest ones. they say how they feel and don't couch it in anything! they don't soften it! they do what's real! and this is how violent maintenance of the status quo and social hierarchies is packaged as good and attractive: because when the details of what those "honest feelings" aren't in your face, everyone knows the raw feeling of realness vs fakeness, and in some sense, logan and people like him aren't wrong. there is a feeling of freedom in refusing to intellectualize or examine your feelings or acquiesce to other people's idea of respect. whether one prioritizes that particular freedom in any given situation is sometimes up to them and their values, and sometimes it's just part of the landscape and it's easy, and sometimes it's a forbidden, compulsive thrill.

There is a vitally important NanRhea headcanon that I forgot to post with the others, and it's that Rhea enjoys reality TV and will relax watching her housewives in the evenings while Nan thinks it's all low IQ gutter trash. HOWEVER...if Rhea has it on and Nan walks by, she will oftentimes stop to stand there watching it too and make commentary to Rhea 😭 Rhea says that she's welcome to sit down and join her if she wants to watch too, to which Nan always says "I'm not watching it 🙄"
