Ngl if someone opened peace talks by trying to say they had the same trauma as I did, making us the same, and they had to use a cane because someone took an axe to their leg while I was vivisected over the course of a week while my tormentor tried to keep me awake for every moment then my body was thrown out like garbage after that, I would also be pretty upset.
I have decided that in honor of Disability Pride Month, I will be making one post daily about my favorite disabled characters.
Starting today with one of my favorites, Philip J. Coulson AKA Phil AKA Coulson from the MCU. I will chronicle his journey until his disability (only until because it’s a looooong journey. Watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for more) and then how he deals with it after.
Phil’s first appearance was in Iron Man (2008), where he repeatedly tried to talk to Tony Stark about his Iron Man suit and eventually attempted to help Pepper Potts in arresting Obadiah Stane. He also helped create an alibi for Tony Stark for a press conference (which Tony completely ignored)
but we see him in flashbacks even earlier in Captain Marvel (2019) working alongside Agent Nick Fury (soon to be head of S.H.I.E.L.D.), as he tries to track down a mysterious alien woman who crashed through a Block Buster. He also lies about seeing Agent Fury in the stairwell and allows Fury and Captain Marvel to get away from the agents chasing them.
His next appearance is in Iron Man 2, where he supervises a drunk Tony Stark and gives him the means to create a new element to save Tony’s own life. He then leaves after a call about an 084 (object of unknown origin) in New Mexico.
In the Marvel One Shot, ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer’, he saves a young cashier in a truck stop from a bunch of robbers using a bag of flour.
He then appears in Thor (2011) as the S.H.I.E.L.D. officer in charge of Thor’s Hammer. He seizes Jane Foster’s equipment, but later gives it back after Thor destroys the Destroyer with the Hammer. Thor calls him ‘Son of Coul’.
In the Marvel On Shot, ‘The Asset’, Coulson conspires with Jasper Sitwell to make sure that General Ross doesn’t allow the Abomination to join the Avengers by sending Tony Stark to annoy him.
He then appears in The Avengers (2012) in the fight against Loki, but Loki stabs him and he dies of his wounds (or does he). His ‘death’ inspires the Avengers to band together and defeat Loki (with some manipulation from Fury of course).
His journey then continues in the show ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013-2020). The show was originally created to satisfy fans who wanted more MCU between movies, but quickly because an entity of its own. (The show was also created in response to fans refusing to accept Coulson’s death in The Avengers.)
As explained in Agents of Shield (season one), Nick Fury was unable to handle Coulson’s death, so he used Project T.A.H.I.T.I., which was to be used in the event of a fallen Avenger. In a later conversation, Fury explained the Coulson was an Avenger, which is why he was put through the process. T.A.H.I.T.I. brought Coulson back to life, but erased his memory because the trauma of being brought back would’ve driven him insane.
He was then given his own team:
Two Specialists; Agent Grant Ward
and Agent Melinda May.
A Doctor, Agent Jemma Simmons
and a Technician, Agent Leopold Fitz.
They later picked up Skye, a computer hacker who worked for the Rising Tide (a rebel organization) but soon decided to stay with the team.
They go on missions and fight evil until the events of Captain America and the Winter Soldier (2014) where it is revealed that Grant Ward is a Hydra double agent.
The team (sans Ward) erases their identities and continues S.H.I.E.L.D. at Nick Fury’s orders, with Coulson as Director.
In season two of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson has to deal with a lot. There is another faction of S.H.I.E.L.D. going by the moniker ‘The real S.H.I.E.L.D.’ led by Robert Gonzolez. A few of Coulson’s trusted team members ended up being a part of this faction. After much fighting and drama, they eventually reconcile and create a new S.H.I.E.L.D. together.
He also has to deal with a new ‘threat’ called inhumans. Inhumans are born as regular people but are then put through ‘Terrigenesis’ and gain unique abilities. Terrigenesis is a process which includes Terrigen crystals, a type of crystal that is fatal to human touch, but when broken, creates a mist that turns anyone who touches it into a stone statue. If the person is human, they die immediately, but if they are inhuman, they then gain their unique power.
At the end of season two, the team ends up on ‘The Real S.H.I.E.L.D.’s base which is a boat. The inhumans plan to unleash the Terrigen mist into the air ducts, effectively killing every human on board. They end up in the room where there is access to the entire ventilation system. They kill the inhuman trying to put the plot into action but in doing so, he drops the Terrigen crystal he is holding. Coulson, in a heroic move, leaps to catch it before it can turn to mist and kill everyone. However, since he is human, his arm starts to turn to stone. He is effectively dying. Agent Alphonso ‘Mack’ Mackenzie says ‘nope not today’ and amputates his arm on the spot with an axe.
Coulson is obviously disappointed about this, but Leo Fitz designs a state of the art prosthetic hand for him.
He later gets a more realistic prosthetic after leaving his old one on an alien planet after killing his mortal enemy, Grant Ward with it.
It has all kinds of cool updates, and functions like a computer.
It also has a shield, as Coulson puts it ‘I thought the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. should have a shield.’ He saves Melinda May with said shield twice, sharing a kiss with her the second time.
It’s stated that Coulson has several different prosthetics throughout the show, including a ‘civvy arm’ for everyday use with no bells nor whistles.
Phil Coulson deals with a lot more in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., including androids, aliens, and time travel. Go watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for more!
Happy Disability Pride Month to Phil Coulson, arm amputee!
Going back through the older seasons of Agents of SHIELD and I have to say I really hate the writing making Jiaying into “a villain all along”. She had significant reason to be distrustful of any outsiders, especially a government organization. Not to mention she approached Raina and S.H.I.E.L.D with a level of hesitation, and Cal was the one to plant seeds of doubt in her mind about whether they could be trusted.
Jiaying was tortured and vivisected by HYDRA, which at the time was within SHIELD, just so her ability could be given to an old man who deserved to die. This same group took her baby away from her for years.
She also had Cal, her husband who she cared for despite the fact that he was clearly insane telling her that the register would be the end of their people. Even if SHIELD is no longer a part of HYDRA, they’re carrying a weapon on their vessel that is foretold to be the death of their people.
And to top it off, Gonzalez went in instead of Coulson. And even Skye visibly reacted because she was expecting Coulson, and knew Gonzalez was the leader of the SHIELD faction that ordered for her to be shot and killed, rather than brought in, and might have even put the order in. And Gonzalez openly tells Jiaying that SHIELD will be stepping in and taking authority of the situation, for no reason other than they can.
To be clear, most of what she did seemed in character. I think she panicked for good reason, because she was faced with a shadowy government organization that emerged from the smoking wreckage of the same organization that cut her open and stole her baby from her. and given the resources SHIELD had, there was nothing she could do except hope to take them down.
What I do resent is that season 2 had so many options for villains that they had been building up to. Hydra, an organization full of bonafide Nazis who don’t believe in freedom. Cal, a man who’s clearly gone insane from the loss of his daughter and wife who will do anything to keep his family together. Ward, a man who has never taken personal accountability for his own actions. Kara, a tortured woman being led by Grant into believing the only thing that will bring her peace is revenge.
Hell, in the scene where she gets her villain reveal, Jiaying isn’t even the shadiest person in the room. Gonzalez is a former SHIELD leader who was willing to tear apart the entire organization down just to prove a point. He and the rest of his faction were rambling about transparency, in a spy agency, even though the way he infiltrated Coulson’s faction was double agents and more secrecy. He had a clear bias against the Inhumans, going as far to reprimand Bobbi for Skye’s escape and injury of Calderon, when Calderon disobeyed Bobbi’s orders to use non-lethal force to apprehend Skye (that is, unless he had orders from higher up to just kill Skye outright). And then even when Coulson is cooperating, he goes out of his way to dictate every choice by arguing that Phil is too biased in favor of powered people, and puts it up to a vote to overrule Coulson. Then he waltzes into Jiaying’s home and tells her what is going to happen to her people regardless of whether or not she complies.
But the writers decided that nope, the BBEG for the two part finale arc is going to be the traumatized woman who appeared in like seven episodes for maybe 10 minutes total, several of which were flashbacks in which she was getting tortured or was dead.
Use these quotes to equip you as you fight the good fight. Allow these ideals to give you strength and the fortitude to keep going. Add your own from season 2, or make your own post! This is our call as accomplices. This is our call as agents.

Look I had a really emotional night watching figure skating and anyway I don’t remember this episode at all so I hope I’m not going to be crying again. Hahaha. I’m not really a crier it was just one of those competitions.
Of course a Koenig has Star Wars sheets
It’s a flashback wheee
Oh no he mentioned Trip :(
Theta protocol issssssssss....a helicarrier? I expected something more exciting.
Really, I can’t believe all this drama is over a helicarrier.
May is still mad
Phil wants to reunite Shield, which, I mean, kind of just means back to where we were.
Lincoln is freaking out over being at Shield which I kind of wonder if all this is due to Jiaying scaring him on purpose
Also Raina is like some freaky inhuman Oracle which is both interesting and kind of hilarious because she’s obviously living for the drama
So according to Cal Raina was some kind of street orphan in a Dickens novel?
IT’S THE CREEPY KREE TELEPORTER ROCK
YES YOU SHOULD HAVE DESTROYED IT GONZALEZ
I JUST REALLY HATE THIS ROCK OK
Poor Daisy really is stuck between a rock and a hard place
But also low blow bringing out Bahrain
Ugh Real Shield needs to CHILL and leave the Inhumans alone for now
Look, Cal’s not wrong about Raina. They’d all do better to listen to him.
May and Coulson are both a little awkward about Daisy having a bio mom too now
PHIL CALLED HER MELINDA ALERT ALERT
But also I hate when they fight
Also I find it interesting that May says that the lines were clear- she was married to Andrew and worked with Phil. Does that means the lines aren’t clear now?
I think Fitzsimmons joke with the hula dancer is HILARIOUS
That’s no way to look at your girl’s dad Lincoln. So much stink eye for real.
It’s so hard to tell if Raina is telling the truth or trying to manipulate Gordon or both
Daisy’s spending all her time trying to convince the each side that the other are full of good people which ehhhh
NO GONZALEZ SHOULDN’T GO UGH
I feel like May supported him out of anger
Jemma taking Ward’s foolish decisions upon her is bad.
Jemma needs some serious therapy. This will be a constant theme forever basically.
Mack sounds super bitter about Coulson being back which I find hilarious considering what he is now.
Bet he regrets giving Coulson such a hard time.
Cal and Jiaying were getting really cozy there, but I don’t trust anything she says.
“I think we’ve been spending too much time together” Noooo hahaha I love this combo though.
Ooooooooof course Kara is making bad life choices
With Ward
KARA NO
Ha of course Jiaying didn’t trust Raina
And is scheming with Cal
Sigh
NO ONE IS MAKING GOOD LIFE CHOICES HERE
When you’re quoting a legit Nazi, you should be questioning everything you are doing
Whew Jiaying has definitely gone off the deep end
Also she’s a liar
GROSS GROSS GROSS
Shut up Ward
Honestly this was more drama than I needed. So it gets an 11/10 on the DRAMA scale. Also Jiaying gets my inaugural BAD LIFE CHOICES Award. Congrats madam.
Our song for this episode is War by The Cardigans because Jiaying was really on fire to start this war. Look at your life look at your choices.
we’ve known for a while that the real Fitz doesn’t like to be called “Leo,” and this episode implied proof for my theory as to why - it’s what his father called him.
