Chapter one
Y/N sat at the back of the class like usual, his hood pulled over his head as he tried to focus- focus on anything other than the other students mumbling about him. Y/N wasn't popular by any means, quite the opposite. He liked keeping to himself, and his friend group wasn't the biggest- but it was comfy, his friends never made fun of him for being himself, they encouraged it even.
He glanced up at the clock, hanging above the whiteboard, a quiet yet frustrated sigh leaving his lips as he realised that the class had barely begun- yet he already felt like packing his things up and leaving to go home. That was his usual routine by now, he never bothered with his classes- let alone Mr.Kim's math class.. It was always so boring, and the professor's monotone voice didn't help at all.
Y/N was lost in his thoughts, thinking about literally anything besides numbers- he had already given up on trying to understand math, even before he got into college, which to him was a miracle that he even got in. But even while being a mediocre student, his grades weren't half bad- the only class he was at risk of failing was this one, and to him, that was good enough.
As the hour passed, he had only managed to solve two problems before he decided that it was enough for today. The rest of the class passed by in a blur as he doodled random shapes and animals in the margins of his notebook.
As soon as the bell rang, signaling the end of the class, Y/N was one of the first students who started shoving his things back into his tote bag. He let a breath slip past his lips, one he didn't even know he was holding, as he carefully picked up his pens to store them back into his pencil case.
"Y/N? Come to my desk, please."
He furrowed his brows as he glanced up, his lips pressing into a thin line as he finished packing the last of his things back into his tote. A few students giggled under their breaths as they passed by, making him roll his eyes as he pulled his chair back into place. He gripped the straps of his bag like a lifeline, making his way towards his professor.
"You wanted to see me?" Y/N spoke in a harsher tone than he intended to, his knuckles turning white at how tight he was gripping the straps of his bag. The professor only gave a short nod as an answer, pulling a folder from one of his drawers before he placed it on the desk- sliding it towards Y/N as he began speaking in a calm tone. "I don't think I need to elaborate any further." Professor Kim leaned forward, flipping open the folder to show Y/N the contents of it.
Y/N glanced down, biting the inside of his cheek as he mentally prayed that the floor would open up and swallow him whole. Inside the folder were Y/N's previous exams, all of which he had failed miserably due to his lack of interest in the subject. All the color drained from his face as he read over the results of his exams.
Professor Kim sighed as he folded his hands on his desk, briefly glancing towards Y/N before he turned his attention back to the folder that was in front of them. “Your grades have been getting worse and worse as the semesters go by..” He reached to flip through the exams as if to prove a point, as he began speaking once again. “I talked with your other teachers, and you’re not failing any of their classes, so is there a particular reason as to why you’re failing this one?”
“W-well..” Y/N's mouth opened and closed as he desperately tried to come up with an excuse. He gripped his bag even tighter, his nails digging into his palm as he suddenly felt nervous. Sure, he didn’t care about this class, but he also didn’t expect to be called out for his bad grades so soon. “I just.. I don’t really get math.” He admitted, forcing a nervous laugh that died halfway through. “No matter how much I try to study, it just doesn’t stick.”
Professor Kim hummed quietly, his expression unreadable as he flipped the folder shut. “And have you tried asking for help?” Y/N's shoulders tensed, his hands falling from their grip on his bag as he fidgeted with the rings that adorned his fingers, avoiding his professor's gaze. “Not really..” He confessed as he twisted the ring on his pointer finger. “I didn’t think it would make much of a difference.”
Professor Kim didn’t answer right away. He took the folder from his desk and slid it back into the top drawer of his desk before closing it. As the silence stretched between them, Y/N started to slowly regret opening his mouth at all.
“That kind of thinking..” The professor finally spoke, his tone calm and even as he leaned back against his chair. “Is why you’re standing here, instead of walking out with everyone else.” Professor Kim shifted slightly from where he was sitting, reaching out for a pad of sticky notes before scribbling something on it. He tore the small note off and handed it over to Y/N.
He took the note from his professor, his brows furrowing slightly in confusion as he read the name that was written on it in neat handwriting.
Jeong Yunho
“I’ve already arranged a tutor for you.” Professor Kim explained as he rested his arms on the armrests of his chair. “Jeong Yunho is at the top of his class, and he’s very patient in the way he explains things to others. He’ll be waiting for you after your next class with me. I expect you to show up and follow through with this arrangement if you don’t wish to fail my class.” His tone remained calm and final, the type that didn’t leave room for any arguments.
Y/N nodded slowly, tucking the note into the pocket of his hoodie along with his hands. “That’ll be all for now.” Professor Kim gestured towards the door with his hand before he turned his attention to the pile of papers that were semi-scattered all over his desk. Y/N mumbled a small “Thank you.” As he made his way out of the classroom, he stepped into the hallway, shutting the door with a soft click that was muffled by the chatter of students who were walking through the halls.
Y/N walked down the hall at a slow pace. He wasn’t sure what he was supposed to feel at the moment- Embarrassed, maybe, or relieved that Professor Kim was kind enough to give him a second chance? Regardless of what he was supposed to be feeling, he couldn’t deny the feeling in his chest- a dull ache of uncertainty, the kind that only comes from knowing that something in his routine was about to change, whether he wanted it to or not.
So, Twilight captured is a very literal working title of Twilight being captured by the Yiga as a wolf. They don’t realize he can transform but recognize that the wolf travels with Wild. Twilight attempts to escape by transforming again, which almost works. The others realize that he’s missing and start a frantic search for him when they find out he’s been captured. It’s… pretty graphic violence-wise, and I haven’t worked on it in quite a while, but I have a whole ideas document and rough outline for the story.
I'll put a snippet under the cut in case anyone's interested!
Heads up for moderate injury (kind of to an animal, to Twilight in wolf form).
A deafening SNAP rang out at the same time pain exploded in Twilight's leg. A sound between a yelp and a scream jolted from his lungs, high-pitched and shrill. Two spiked arches of iron had jumped from the leaves underfoot and bit his leg. He bared his teeth, whimpering as he tried to move his leg. He only received white-hot pain for his efforts. A trap, he’d walked right into a hunter’s foothold trap. Blood ran hot and fast down his leg from where the trap had sunk its teeth into him, clotting in his fur. He pawed at the trap with his free forelimb, but he couldn’t get any kind of grip on it to try and free himself. He briefly considered shifting back into a human before realizing it’d be his arm caught in the trap. He couldn’t open it with just one hand and besides, shifting while the trap’s teeth were still in him might result in it mangling his limb even further.
He shifted his weight without thinking about it and a fresh wave of pain tore a yelp from him. His ears perked up at a rustle in the bushes to his left. His head snapped up, a low growl in his throat as he saw a man emerge from behind some trees. Black cloth covered the lower half of his face, but Twilight could see his brow furrow in a frown.
“A wolf?” he muttered, moving closer. Twilight growled louder, hunching low, ears flat, and the man stopped.
“Did you get one?” another voice called and Twilight whipped his head around to see another man with the same face covering approach from the other side.
“No,” the first man said, irritation creeping into his tone. “Just an animal.”
Twilight stiffened at the words. If the men weren’t hunting for animals, what were they hunting? Fire lapped at his leg and he funneled the pain into his growl, pulling his lips back and snarling at the men as they moved closer.
“Shame,” the second man said, stopping just out of reach of Twilight’s jaws.
“I suppose we should kill it, reset the trap,” the first man said and Twilight snarled louder.
The second man hummed, circling around Twilight so he stood in front of him. His head tiled thoughtfully, examining Twilight more closely. The first man withdrew a weapon in the shape of a crescent, glinting wickedly in the dim sunlight filtering through the forest canopy. He stepped forward and Twilight barked, straining forward as far as he dared, snapping and snarling.
“Hold,” the second man called, raising a fist. The first man paused, glancing at the other. “Look at the mark on its head. And its eyes.”
The first man’s eyes flicked back over to Twilight, studying him. “Blue. Unusual color for a wolf.” His eyes widened. “Don’t tell me this is the wolf seen traveling with the hero?”
Twilight’s growls intensified and the second man nodded. “That appears to be the case.”
The first man huffed, folding his arms across his chest. “And? I doubt it’ll just lead us to him.”
“No? If we release it, it may go limping back to its master.”
“I doubt it. This is no ordinary animal, it seems smarter than that.”
“Maybe so.” The second man hummed thoughtfully. “Let’s take it back. Seems too valuable to kill outright.”
The first man huffed but reached into the pack at his hip. “Carrying this thing is going to be a pain.” He pulled out a long, rounded piece of woven metal, stepping toward Twilight. Twilight snarled with renewed vigor, adrenaline numbing the pain in his leg as he snapped at the man. That was a muzzle, a goddess-damned muzzle in the man’s hand and Twilight barked, froth bubbling at the back of his jaw as he struggled against the trap, heedless of the hot waves of pain each movement cost him. The man strafed from side to side, looking for the best angle to lunge at Twilight. Twilight followed his every step, not once taking his eyes off the muzzle.
Silver flashed past his eyes and his head yanked back, a metal cage jamming over his snout. He’d forgotten to keep an eye on the other man. He barked and thrashed as the muzzle buckled around his head, squeezing his jaw shut. Panic bubbled in his gut as he tried and failed to open his mouth, whipping his head from side to side. He tried to turn to claw the man behind him, but the trap around his leg stopped him, pain flaring through his bone. Then something slammed into the base of his skull and his consciousness fled.
