Doppelganger is one of those episodes that I love but also face with a certain level of dread. This time, I was determined to see it with hope. I know that it points to some deep and troubling elements within Sheppard's psyche, but I wanted to put on some hope-colored glasses instead of dark ones this time.

Sheppard woke up the Wraith, which got Sumner killed. Sheppard had to kill Sumner. He's lost Ford, Carson, Elizabeth, and almost Ronon. They've had to abandon their planet and almost lost Atlantis while Sheppard was in charge. Now, he thinks he lost McKay. It's no wonder he feels like he's the biggest danger to his people. Stargate is all about never leaving your people behind, but Sheppard can't stop people from leaving or dying.

Keller says that Sheppard is "a significant negative presence in our dreams."

But the story doesn't end there.

Sheppard down and beaten isn't alone. McKay isn't dead. He's so not dead, McKay saves Sheppard from himself. And those last few seconds of this episode? Sheppard isn't alone. He is surrounded by friends, by people who accept him, trust him, and need him. He's surrounded by the people and the city who want him.

Also, I love the moment Teyla goes to find him and gives him a hug. That had to be a fortifying blessing to him.

This is a hard episode. It's a moment of revelation about the struggles Sheppard has that he rarely shares with anyone. But it does end in joy. It does end with hope. It is like a fairy tale, giving us a glimpse at the end of the 'universal final defeat' of sorrow and failure.

im on season 4 of rewatching glee for the millionth time and i think i might actually rewatch the break up episode this time around. ive literally only watched it the one time and havent been able to bring myself to watch it ever again. but maybe its time
