Summary: John visits Sherlock’s grave, but he’s not as alone as he thinks.
Word count: 625 (just a lil one)
Warnings: angst; sad, sentimental Sherlock; the robot has feelings; sad john; reference to a ‘case’ for plot reasons 😀; little pop-up from Mycroft at the end.
A/N: Bit of a vague summary but I don’t want to spoil anything. This is set after Sherlock fakes his death and before he reveals himself to John. I saw a piece of fanart that resembled something like this and it got me thinking and, of course, now I could find the og fanart 😭

I’d never liked flowers. I didn’t understand the notion of delivering dead plants to a person you cared for. Mother had always argued that the “thought behind the action is what matters” but that thought had never been something I was privy to. That was until now.
I knew that my “stunt” would affect John, I knew he would be hurt and angry but that didn’t matter. I had to make sure he was safe and to do that I needed to die. Naturally, I kept an eye on him, watched him visit my grave, leaving flowers by the headstone and staying to tell me about his week as if I hadn’t been watching his every move. Before leaving he would pat the stone to say his goodbye.
This time, as he stepped towards the stone, his boot caught the wrapper on the fresh bouquet, “I know you don’t understand them… but it helps me, okay? I keep hoping that your distaste for ‘dead plants’ will be enough to drag your ass back here.” John took a shaky breath and let out a soft chuckle, “Just don’t stay dead, you hear me? I need my friend back, Sherlock.” With one last pat of the stone, he stood to attention, turned and left.
I rooted myself to the spot, ensuring that he had left the vicinity before I allowed myself to move. I slowly approached my grave, eyes fixed on the bouquet. My mind spun with the possible meaning of the flowers as I knelt to retrieve them. White forget-me-nots and yellow roses. There had been a case, some time ago, that had led me to a book regarding the Victorian practice of floriography. Although it hadn’t taken me long to find what I was searching for, John had spent days studying the book’s content, commenting on the meaning of each flower and his amazement with such nonsense.
Forget-me-nots… remembrance. Yellow roses… deep, unbreakable ties of a friendship.
I saw now what John’s goodbye had truly meant. I had hurt my friend, deeply. John wasn’t often one for soft words and sentimental feelings, I had always liked that about him. But there was something about these flowers that struck me to my core. The skin of my cheek felt damp and I pulled my hand up to touch it. Looking down at my fingers I frowned, this had never happened before.
It was a tear. I was… crying?
My knees shook as I lowered myself to the ground, resting my back against the headstone as I stared at the bouquet still clutched in my hand. What had I done? John was hurting because of me and there was nothing I could do to fix it. I didn’t know how. My friend was hurt and no amount of deducing or research could change that. I was out of my depth and drowning in strange, new feelings. Huh… feelings? That was a first.
I don’t know how long I sat there, wallowing in the suffocating silence as I touched each delicate flower petal.
My phone buzzed repeatedly in my pocket, “Why does this idiot always insist on calling?” I grumbled, answering the call, “Mycroft. This better be important.”
“Sherlock, are you…” Mycroft stopped himself, coughed and continued on a path that wouldn't end with me slipping laxatives into his next meal, “It’s time Sherlock. The car is waiting for you at the cemetery gate. I have people in place to watch John, he will be safe.”
I cleared my throat and pulled myself up from the ground, “Very well.” The call cut off. I moved towards the entrance, flowers still clutched at my side. I turned, one last time, focusing on my headstone, “Soon, John. Soon… I promise.”

Ink and ink pen on grey paper, A5
From the @whumptober prompt list.
Headcanon:
Mrs Hudson came back from the wedding, it was late and when she checked on Sherlock she found him on the sofa, still in his suit, looking exhausted and mentally absent.
"Sherlock?"
"Hmmn?"
"Why don't you go to bed, dear?"
"Can't…"
She stepped closer. "Oh, are you having nightmares again?"
Sherlock frowned, obviously he had hoped she hadn't noticed. When he looked up at her, his expression said it all.
"Come on, you need some rest," Mrs Hudson stepped closer, ready to drag him to his room.
Sherlock jumped up and slipped out of his dress coat.
"I have to go out…" He grabbed a shabby looking rain jacket from the hook on the door and hurried down the stairs.
"What? Now?" Mrs Hudson said to the empty room.

I don’t like to hate on one of my comfort characters but I realized something earlier today and I’d like to share it.
John Watson was an asshole to Sherlock. I know, I know. John and Sherlock loved each other, yes. But John obviously didn’t love Sherlock enough to hate him so many times.
When Sherlock came back from “being dead”, John tackled him and punched him multiple times. Yeah, it was a big deal and it messed him up. But not once did John ask Sherlock why he had to fake his death and leave everyone and everything he cared about. He didn’t even ask him if he was ok. But us as viewers, could clearly see how Sherlock was in fact, not ok. And then when Sherlock tried to solve the mystery of the episode but John wasn’t there to keep him down to earth and he couldn’t concentrate bc he kept thinking of John. It was so sad. He needs John for his well-being.
And then, when John and Mary got married, not one person danced with Sherlock. No one even looked at him. It was so sad. Yeah, it was John’s wedding day but he could at least be with his best friend too. It was a big day for both of them. And when Sherlock left the wedding early, it broke my heart. Especially, bc of what Mrs. Hudson has said earlier in that episode. Thankfully, they were still best friend. For awhile, at least.
And then when Mary died, I just knew this was going to be a really bad thing. Not just bc she died, but bc of how it would affect John and Sherlock’s relationship. But it was so much worse than I thought. John shut Sherlock out and blamed him for Mary’s death. What was Sherlock supposed to do? Jump in front of the bullet and him die instead? Wtf, John?! He hated Sherlock for months bc of this. And you know what happened to Sherlock? He went back to drugs. Why? Bc John has such a big affect on Sherlock. He loves John, even if he doesn’t know it. It physically and mentally hurt him for John to hate him for that long and he snapped. I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t just do drugs.
Sherlock did so much for him and Mary. And John had the AUDACITY to blame him for Mary’s death. But no one payed any attention to it bc you all think that it’s completely fine to blame someone for someone else’s death, even tho they had no control over it. John is an asshole and no one can tell me otherwise.
I still believe in Johnlock tho lol. I just wanted to share this.
‘The many times Sherlock talked to Greg in confidence.’ or more widely known as ‘Sherlock is hiding from John.’
2-
A string of disgruntled curses came from the two men making their way through the dim flat halls. Through the process waking multiple neighbors, getting yelled at by one and nearly kicking a hole in the wall they reach Gregs flat.
From there Greg manages to dump Sherlock on his couch, the detective having been nursing what looked to be a broken leg. He might be the only person in the world who could initially act like he wasn’t hurt at all before panicking about it and then acting as if he was going to die over it.
Sherlock groaned adjusting his position on the couch. “You could be gentle.” He grumbled lifting his leg onto the couch.
“No, no. I practically carried you from the station to here and up three flights of stairs, so no. I can’t, and if anything you should be thanking me.” Greg sighed and ran a hand over his face, actually grateful when he heard no reply from the detective.
He turned and went to the kitchen to make form tea for the both of them. He imagined he’d have Sherlock here for a day or so before he finally gives in and goes to the hospital. He really didn’t need to take care of him anymore though.
“Alright, look. I’m going to call John in the morning and he’ll come and look after you alright?” Greg asked after about fifteen minutes had passed and came out from the kitchen setting Sherlocks tea on the coffee table in what came to be known as his mug.
“I don’t need John to look after me.” He replied in a sulk and Greg sighed moving to sit in his armchair needing to relax after lugging him around all day.
“You can say that when you stop hurting yourself when he’s not around.” He grumbled collapsing into his armchair.
“It’s not intentional..”
Greg let it rest at that and a silence fell over them in the dim living room. It was nearly sunrise already, the current case having been weighing heavy on both their shoulders. Not to mention Sherlocks leg.
He wasn’t entirely sure what had occurred that he’d gotten there but he’d come across the unconscious detective at the bottom of a flight of stairs as he was getting off his late night shift. Sherlock refused to give any details just that it was related to the case, however that meant and both didn’t want the hospital nor John. Why, he couldn’t fathom.
“Don’t tell John.” He heard from the other side of the room some odd minutes later where he lay immobile. It might have just been the oxdiest tone he’d every heard Sherlock speak in.
“Why?” He asked instead of commenting further on it, still trying to figure out what it meant. More silence followed.
“He’ll be upset.” Was all he got in return and in a way he felt some sort of sympathy for the man. He was trying, despite not doing it very well greg could tell he was putting an effort in and he found it in him to respect him for it.
“You’ll tell him yourself?” He glanced over to him in the darkness and spotted a nod. “Alright. I’ll bring you back tomorrow, get some sleep.”
Greg stood and left for his bedroom, he knew he probably wouldn’t ever know what happened that night nor if Sherlock would ever tell John the truth but what he did find out that night was that Sherlock wasn’t as selfish as everyone thought. Which he always knew but sometimes it was nice to see the proof for himself.
[Season 2] Cried real tears when faking his own death
[Season 3] Was on the verge of tears when saying goodbye to John
[Season 4] Again cried real tears and was heartbroken on discovering the truth of redbeard
His reasons to cry, as the show progressed, reveals a lot about his character development. I could be wrong but I think Moffat and Gatiss did this on purpose.
