As I was sitting at my kitchen table reading my Yogi wellness magazine, I come across the word Sankalpa. San meaning “born from the heart” and kappa meaning “unfolding overtime” and as I read the article, i begin to think about things, and look over my goals, ambitions, the things I love in life, the things that I do because the are the social norm. basically I thought about everything. The point of this article that made me love it so much, is that it’s a process in discovering self-love, and self-care.
The first step is asking myself and my soul, “what is essential that I become or achieve to fulfill my highest purpose? Really think about that question. I read this question, and walked away for a few days. Honestly, I still haven't fully answered it. It is making me reflect on things that I do now. My job, where I live, my lifestyle. I started doing my yoga practice again a week ago, and it has made a huge difference in my mood, how I see things, what is worth getting agitated about. I also allow myself to be present with the time happening right now and what's happening around me. How other people react. Road rage, cutting people off for their own time, not opening doors or holding the elevator for the person rush with their hands full of groceries. It amazes me how we treat each other. What happened to saying hello, good morning, helping others out of the kindness of our hearts. What happened to doing something good just because? What happened to living in the moment? We are so self absorbed with our social media, and our phones, the internet, getting that photo of the event happening right in front of me, that we forget to live in that moment.
Now, I'm not saying social media is bad, nor the internet because look at me right now. Im saying that with my journey to discover my sankalpa, I discovered the present moment I am living right now. I realized that yes I love my job, but I want more out of it than what I have now. I decided to instead of taking that picture, Id live that moment, and deal with a photograph later. I make a point to open the doors for others, say good morning. Remember to smile. I deactivated my instagram, and snapchat because I saw it as a lie. I post pictures of what I think people what to see, but shouldn't I post pictures that I want to see? Shouldn't I use instagram as a place to express myself, not a place where Im trying to show how successful I've become in my job, or the next milestone I've completed. Why does any of that matter to anyone else other than my love ones and close friends? Well, the answer is, it doesn't. Why does the person I went to high school with 6 years ago care where I live, who I date, what I eat, wear, or do for a living unless its to compare their own success? Why feed into this? Why do I care what that person has done? How does it affect me other than show that they make more, or they live in a bigger apartment.
So to conclude this rant, I ask you to ask yourself what your sankalpa is? This is where I've gotten in the last few days. Allow yourself to see the world and the people around you. Do the things that makes you smile everyday.
