In high school, Dorien Bryant demonstrated his athletic prowess in track and field, and especially football, where he excelled as a wide receiver. And he maintained a machismo image.
“I had girls hanging all over me.”
But in high school, he knew he was at least bisexual but didn’t act on it.
Bryant enrolled at Purdue University in 2004 and joined their Boilermakers football team. He played four seasons.
Bryant held 23 different school and Big Ten records. He was a four-time All-Big Ten selection and participated in the 2008 Senior Bowl.
He ranked second in school history with 292 receptions, third with 3,548 yards receiving.
He holds a Purdue record with 6,219 all-purpose yards.
But during his junior year, he began a relationship with a male cheerleader.
“It was fun to feel like there was no judgment. But there was trust.”
But later, he would admit:
“I don’t think there were any true feelings.”
Then things quickly spiraled out of his control. He suffered injuries on the field. And the relationship with the cheerleader fizzled. Unfortunately, scorned lovers sometimes seek revenge. Rumors began circulating about Bryant’s sexuality. When teammates asked him.
“I had to play dumb. (Admitting it) could have ruined my life.”
Things got worse during a game against Indiana State. Bryant saw a cardboard cutout with his picture next to rainbow flags in the Sycamores’ section and Gay chants echoed across the field. Could he hide his sexuality for an entire pro career?
“That game was an eye-opening experience. I remember thinking, I’m not going to be able to do this for another six or seven years.”
That choice was ultimately out of Bryant’s hands as well. With multiple injuries in his senior year, he was labeled an injury risk. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008 but was later released.
Although he didn’t have a career in professional football, the sport will always be part of his life. As recently as 2022, Bryant was invited back to Purdue to serve as Honorary Captain in a match against their rivals, Iowa State.
Had he been signed to a professional team, would Dorien have been the only Gay NFL player?
“I think there had to be a solid six or seven guys who—I’m pretty sure—I mean, they may not have been gay, but they would definitely get into bed with a guy.”
So found out last night while late night insomnia induced Google searching that the butt stain who brutally murdered my Aunt Rose on November 13 1987, shooting her 3 times in the chest and 3 times in the head before leaving her in a shallow grave for dead.....was paroled in 2020.
Not many of my family members who were there for the crime itself are still alive today. And the very few that are I don't talk to anymore. so As most likely one of the very few people who still think about her on a regular basis. I can't imagine how anyone could look at this crime and think that somebody like that deserves to be out of prison.
He planned the murder of my aunt for weeks. this was no crime of passion. this was no spontaneous hormone fueled rage because she dared to break up with him.. This was premeditated murder that was planned for 3 weeks where he talked about killing her and even went so far as to ask a friend of his where he could get a gun after talking about killing my aunt rose.
Nobody took him seriously. And I can see why as a teenager making these statements. Because you know you just got broken up with and you know, you thought you'd loved this girl that people may hear you say these things and think "Oh, you know, he's just a scorned lover." You know. but that wasn't the case. I know hindsight is 20/20. And I hope those people who had the chance to at least put what he was saying on the radar of people who could do something about it are forever haunted for a murder that happened that they knew somebody was planning and could have been stopped or avoided before it even came to that tragic end, but they did nothing.
I'm sorry if the punctuation and grammar and everything in this is horrible. I'm using voice to text right now. Because I'm still trying to comprehend the fact that this man who thought that being dumped by a girlfriend was punishable by death for this innocent life Guilty of nothing but deciding to date him.
(his thoughts on the legend?)
That is quite a dedication to spite. And yet there are those who try it. I am impressed by their resolve.
I have always wanted to interview one, but they do not usually like men, for obvious reasons.

"Delilah" - Tom Jones
1968 Music by Les Reed, lyric by Barry [and Sylvan?] Mason
Let's Do It: my, my, my personal fifty favourite singles from 1954-76.
The murder ballad is a controversial form of music. Not everyone is in favour of songs about killers, and the Welsh Rugby Union recently decided to stop playing this classic at their matches. The WRU are hardly in a place to lecture others about morality, seeing as how they cravenly ban trans women from playing their sport in spite of scientific evidence to the contrary, but let's not get too far from the point.
"Delilah" is a murder ballad. Her lover finds that Delilah is screwing someone else, which is hardly headline news in 1968. The lover goes round to her house, waits for a rival to leave, and uses a knife to kill Delilah.
Lyricist Barry Mason says the song is based on the feelings had about his first teenage crush: they had a summer fling, and then Barry found out "his" girlfriend had a lad back home. Jealous, a whole lot of pain, trauma that lasted for years.
Barry's former wife Sylvan says that's cobblers, that musician Les Reed wrote the "why, why, why, Delilah?" line, and the lyric bears a passing resemblance to the 1954 musical Carmen Jones crossed with the legend of Samson from the book of Judges. Samson - and the protagonist of "Delilah" - will kill rather than live without what he wants. We might meet Samson again when someone nominates Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" in a later timeframe.
Tom Jones always puts his heart and soul into everything he records, and "Delilah" is no exception. Loud and hoarse, we can hear the passion in his voice. A flamenco arrangement is another prominent feature of this song, a loud flare just before the chorus line, making sure we cannot miss it when we hear it. Backing vocalists include Elton John, making his only appearance in my top 50 ("Crocodile rock" finished in the next twenty.) Tom has had more comebacks than anyone, "Delilah" was later covered by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band.
