One thing that is so interesting about the murderbot series is that it (as of rn) doesn’t put any focus on its wealthy class, and only the people that they exploit. We never meet the cruel and generationally wealthy decaquadrillionaires in charge GrayCris, DeltFall, Palisade, Barish-Estranza etc corporations and we probably never will.

I know a lot of royal family historic drama/crazy rich people fight for power type narratives give a lot of space for the fantasy of being at the top of the economic pyramid and glaze over what’s happening at the bottom. It’s all fancy galas and backstabbing and no sweat shops and slavery. And then there is left leaning fictional media that tries to put focus on every class level, with certain people at the top working covertly to help the little guy. But Martha Wells doesn’t let us humanize or even really give our attention to the corporation rims 1-percenters because there are no characters up there. There’s no singular villain or villains causing this. It’s just a vague systemic culture of exploitation and trauma; it’s turtles all the way down but make it oppression all the way up.

all the members of preservation are infantilizing murderbot to some extent but the way gurathin is doing it is by imagining its experience is just like his own. lessening its own experience and replacing it with the way he felt when he came to preservation and left the corporation rim.

murderbot needs to figure out who it is, its identity without these people and their preconceived notions built on what it used to be and what it was made to be. it needs freedom not not just from human subjugation (though thats certainly important) but from their visions of its identity.

and when it repeats 'I need to check the perimeter' gurathin suddenly understands that. 'oh you arent me you arent simple and understandable and you dont fit in a box. any of these boxes. you can't sleep neatly tucked away in one of these pods. dr. mensah might have saved us both and become special to us both in an undefinable way but that doesn't make us the same and that doesn't make her your savior. all your life they have all assumed they knew absolutely how to define you and what to expect from you and That is what you must now escape to develop as a person.'

I love the idea that murderbot looks like just some random inconspicuous dude. Cus like it just looks like any other dude walking down the road without the sec unit armor yet has the brute strength to rip limbs off. You hired this guy to be your IT Consultant only to watch it beat the shit out of everything in the room.

I was thinking about how cool both murderbot's and Three's names really inform their characters, and show just how differently they see themselves.

Murderbot sees itself as the deadly weapon it's been treated as, it's so painfully aware of it's position as a threat to everyone around it. With the combination of it's mass murder incident, and how aware it is of media and personal opinions on sec unit it makes sense. A lot of it's social anxiety comes from its own perceived danger to humans.

Three is one of three sec units, it's part of a group, it liked the others in it's group. Threes names and nature are already way more social and way less fearful of itself. It's just as capable of murder, potentially more capable with it's projectile weapons and being a newer model, but that's not it sees itself. It's no wonder it starts making friends the moment it hits the Taurus, it's identity is social, and the only other sec unit it knows is very antisocial. It doesn't have the internalized fear or itself, or other sec units murderbot does. I'm not sure if it's ever going to be as fiercely independent as murderbot either. If they can ever get it to sit down and consider the consequences of it's own actions it could way more helpful to other freed secunits in the future

Idk I just really love how Martha Wells summed up so much of the characters in their chosen names, even though three chose it's by accident 😂
