The Ermine Portrait, William Segar, 1585
Bluto, Brutus two comic strip bad guys turned into one for the toons. E.C.Segar Popeye is one of my favorite works of art, Thimble Theatre is hilarious. I’m having such a good time drawing Popeye and the rest of the cast of Thimble Theatre. Thanks for looking. Like, follow, comment, and share. Much appreciated.
The Segar "Popeye" cartoons are amazing. Not using more from them on screen is really one of the great missed opportunities in animated cartoons. The characters are more rounded, interesting, fun, and funnier.
Years ago I attended a presentation by animator James Shamus Culhane. He recalled his frustration, trying to get more aspects from Segar into the Fleischer cartoons, since they had rights to use them. He especially wanted to use Wimpy more effectively. He recalled that Dave Fleischer repeatedly vetoed things, saying they were "too intellectual".
Here's a Segar panel from a story where Wimpy switches alliances from Popeye to the evil Sea Hag. Cartoonist Bobby London has called it "Probably the greatest subplot in comics history."
I never intended this blog to be all fanart, but that's how things seem to have gone. Oh well... I drew one and then just kept going.
The tweets have been posted on Tumblr already, but here are the individual images for easier reading as well!
