An amazing and extremely rare Kruger sighting of a pangolin feasting on an ant nest. The footage was captured by our friends Erin and Heather over @landelasafaris - it might be worth joining one of their safaris if they know where to find the pangolins! Small, nocturnal and secretive, pangolins are loosely related to anteaters but have the unique feature of their bodies and tail being covered in shell-like keratin protective panels - the only mammal with this feature. When threatened, the pangolin rolls into a tight ball. Despite the superficial similarities, they are not closely related to the armadillo of Central and South America. This video also shows how pangolins lick up ants on their extremely long and sticky tongues at an incredible speed! Tragically, the pangolin is one of the most trafficked animals in the world, with demand for body parts in Asian 'medicinal' products rendering this an endangered animal across Africa and Asia. .
