Senior Weekend 2010

For students who got into both UCLA and UC Berkeley in 2010, SEA Admit and Senior Weekend was on the same weekend! So these students needed to make a choice, and I chose to check out UC Berkeley because who can say no to the FREE trip to the number one public university in the world! At first, I found myself amongst a ton of Southeast Asian folks - I grew up in a community of 99% Latin@s. My Senior Weekend experience was 3 days of fun-filled activities that focused on politicizing myself on educational disparities. Long story short, Senior Weekend changed my life. It changed my life so much that I said no to a full-ride at UCLA and SIR to UC Berkeley right after I got home.

After big events like this, I'm always left kind of reeling... and this time is no different. It kind of reminds me that everything is temporary, and I hate that I get that feeling. But, on the flip side, I'm glad I have all the memories I made, including a student coming up and saying they looked up to me. If you told me three years ago that I would make an impact like that on a student, I would never have believed you.

It's really an honor to do the work that I do, and students don't understand that for every 'thank you' they send my way, I want to scream five thousand more for them.

Just made myself a mini cheese platter of Cheddar, Munster, and Mozzarella with a glass of iced tea while watching 30 Rock in an attempt to console myself for being finished with college forever.

I'm not going to lie. Senior weekend got me thinking about serious stuff. They got me thinking as if I was answering an essay prompt or something. Oh how I miss it...
