hmm… 1) roberts specifically chose to use the word ‘hen’ instead of the more ungendered ‘chicken’ while describing how dinadan is different from other knights, and 2) the bird on sir robin’s shield resembles a hen much more than it does a rooster. and since it’s monty python that’s obviously the joke, right; he’s a coward so his coat of arms is a literal chicken. and roberts may have just been going for the H alliteration when she wrote that passage. but I think the inherent emasculation that comes of being a cowardly knight is still worth noting… the gendered aspect is present, however subtle. chicken equals coward equals woman equals hen, and they are both labelled as such. much to think about!
