Sobriety!

I'm working on 16 months sober and it's incredible.

My bedroom: same.

My income: same.

My body: same.

My life: 180° different. 100% different.

Working a program has given me the life I thought I'd never have. I feel like I have a purpose again. For all that I've struggled and for all the hard times that have happened in the last year, I can honestly say that recovery is worth it. I'm grateful to be alive.

Days Sober: 260

I’m going to Pride later this morning. It’s actually my second Pride this year(!!!). 🌈Although there’s so much alcohol and so much temptation there, my younger self would be so excited to know that she has pride in her queer self, that she doesn’t have to deny it- especially to herself, and that she has a queer family to celebrate with! I’m prepared to face down the possibility of being exposed to lots of drinking. I don’t want to ruin this day with a relapse at all. It’s a day of self love and drinking, for me, is an act of self hate. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have this celebration of myself, family, and a community who loves and accepts me.

I’m not someone who’s ever struggled with consuming alcohol or illegal drugs, but I don’t drink for health reasons and I found this helpful (tips like “always have a cup/drink in your hand to avoid being awkward” apply for me!) and as someone who lives with an anxiety disorder, the affirmation that “you can go if you’re not having fun” is good to hear.

i just drafted this memoir ish type piece (maybe for a comic) about what led me to sobriety and what i was like before as someone who drank, and i gotta say, i’m proud of myself. i’ve come a really long way (the end of october will be my one year without alcohol!), but i also suffered through some really traumatizing shit bc of drinking. and how i used it to deal with shit. it scares me to think about it still, but i think if i tell these stories, i think people will get a better idea of how necessary my sobriety was and why people need to respect it. why, when people pressure me to drink and party, they are asking the most out of me.
