The Doctor stared blankly out at the starry expanse. She was sitting on the edge of the TARDIS, watching everything spin by.
“You okay?”
She didn’t look up as John came up next to her, then sat beside her. “Yeah,” she mumbled. “I’m always alright.”
John sighed, not saying anything for a moment. “I don’t know what it’s like,” he said finally. “Having to face your enemy again. I’m sorry.”
That wasn’t the problem, though. Not really. It was what the war had turned her into.
“What were you like, John?” She asked quietly. “Before everything.”
John tilted his head, rubbing the back of his shaved head and looking out at the stars. “I don’t remember anymore. You?”
The Doctor shook her head, fingers winding together in her lap. “Same.”
