*****content warning specific trigger mention*****
this a warning for the new netflix tv cartoon Hilda
the theme song that plays at the beginning of the episode starts with a voice saying “ahhh” on an exhale, which then repeats a few times until the “Hilda” part comes in. also there’s a lot of panting sounds when the characters run, which does happen a lot. I’ve found that part easy to predict so I can mute in time, and hasn’t really affected my ability to watch it. Also whenever there is drinking there is always a slurping sound, and when there is eating.. idk what to call it. a squelch? I’ve found those also pretty easy to predict and mute in time.
as for the show itself, Hilda comes across as autistic coded, (to me at least, but I know I’m not the only one), which I appreciate a lot. especially since she’s such a happy kid. Also!! her mom just completely believes her about all the crazy stuff that happens to her, even the things that the mom can’t see. Which was 1) so very refreshing. I’m so exhausted of getting re-traumatized by the trope where the parents brush off their kids “invisible” problems. which I think everyone here can relate to. 2) kind of healing tbh.
anyways that’s my miso trigger warning and my Misophonic Take on the show Hilda, please keep in mind I haven’t finished the season, and I probably didn’t get everything. thanks!
I’m currently in high school and I have misophonia. There’s this girl who smacks her gum in class. I was thinking of writing her a letter to explain her my disease. Do you think this would help? I told her earlier in the year it distracted me and she stopped for a little. After that she now sneaks a piece of gum into her mouth. I don’t think she understands why it distracts me.
hey. I think that’s a fantastic idea, and you’re so brave for trying to reach out to her! I’ve found that people are generally very willing to do what they can to help out when you explain it to them clearly and privately. I’d try to explain about the fight-or-flight reaction. Explain about the tension, panic, stress chemicals and the difficulty of looking away. (Personally I’d probably implore them to keep it quiet because my disorder is real personal biz and not everyone is so willing to oblige, but it’s 100% ur call) I’d probably thank them for trying too. anyways good luck and I think you’re great 👍
I've had miso for many years and I have noticed in these past few months that miso can be relatable to OCD? Like whenever I hear a trigger sound I feel as if I can't get it out of my head and stop thinking about it.I have also noticed little things like replaying a video after a few seconds over and over again because the bar at the bottom of the screen won't go down and running my mouse over the bottom of my screen many times because I feel as if i need to. Are these normal miso conditions?
hey!! I honestly don’t know if it’s normal or not but everything you said is something I go through too.
in fact that one about the mouse? I didn’t even really realize how much I do that until rn.
although!! hearing triggers repeating in my head is something I know happens to other people too.
in fact, quite a while ago someone asked me for advice on it. I had a pretty shit answer tbh looking back on it.
you didn’t ask but this is my New and Improved™ advice on it now:
•you know that THX sound? that very loud sound at the start of movies? yeah that. I try to replay that in my head and it works for me at least
• sing a song in my head/listen to music/both
•read!!!! I’ve been doing this to calm down after miso triggers for as long as I can remember and it’s always worked like nothing else.
• I’m gonna sound like an aspiring arsonist (not the first time I’ve said that wow) but lighting a candle and watching it really helps me?
like, its so hypnotic and the smell is pleasant and the warmth it’s all very distracting I’m getting distracted rn thinking about it so moving on!
• this is cliché but find yourself a chore or something to do! it’s hard to think much when you’re working hard at something.
okay end of the unasked-for list.
there are more than a few disorders that seem to be related to misophonia. as in, a lot of misophonics have them as well but no one has studied a connection.
OCD is one of them! I just read very recently that no one really knows the cause for OCD but one of the risk factors is stress.
I mean… misophonia is definitely stressful enough to make people gain new disorders. I’ve seen it happen. it’s happened to me. it’s common, even. so common I’ve never met someone with miso who didn’t also have depression and anxiety. so that’s my personal theory on it.
so, uh, sorry for the very long answer, thanks for the message and good luck I wish you a good trigger-free day/night
SHE NOT ONLY BELIEVED ME BUT ALSO OFFERED TO HELP BY NOT EATING CLOSE TO MY EAR AND SHE SAID SHE'S GOING TO TRY TO TELL HER FRIENDS AS WELL. IM SO HAPPY
GOOD FOR YOU IM SO HAPPY!! you’re a brave spirit with good taste in friends, nicely done dude👍
Misophonics beware
There is a post circulating around and it keeps showing up on my dash; it has something to do with eye colors but I can’t read it in full because it has a gif of a woman chewing open-mouthedly on it. Just putting it out there, as I’ve seen it on my dash multiple times and even had to use Savior to block the word “hazel” so that it would stop showing up. Beware, fellow Misophonics, and stay safe!!! <333
Is it normal for someone with miso to get triggered when someone else makes a trigger noise but not when you make it? I can't fucking stand when people chew gum but when I chew it, it helps block out noise and it's quite nice?? That I can't hear things??? As well???? Idk...
yeah that’s really normal and lots of people do that👍
