the main reason I don't take complaints about bychance seriously is that the way stranger things depicts "popular" kids is so bad and incel-minded that I can't be mad that people in fandom are interested in a more nuanced portrayal of a non-outwardly-nerdy kid.
and this isn't me accusing the writers of anti-jock bigotry or anything ridiculous like that, just me saying that writing about power dynamics in high school should come with the acknowledgement of the humanity of the kids involved to be effective--these dynamics are cruel and painful but they're also thorny, nuanced and juicy with potential drama. it's funny that they keep bringing up E.T. because both in E.T. and The Fabelmans Spielberg does an infinitely better job in portraying these dynamics than ST does. hell Glee did a better job with that, and if Glee did a better job with anything than you did, you know you fucked up.
it's just so rich that they made dustin talk about "divides" in his speech as if those divides hadn't been built into the writing from the start with no character being allowed to actually challenge or complicate them (except for steve, who only lived after the fact because he became so popular with the audience--which shocked the writers apparently, because what do you mean a character changing and proving he's more than his initial archetype would suggest makes him compelling to viewers? Inconceivable!). in ST liking D&D or liking basketball divides characters in two different species, the good guys and the bad guys. as for the popular girls, they're allowed sympathy only if they're lowkey into the "good guys," aka, the nerds--which is why chrissy had to flirt with eddie before dying violently, and nancy had to dance with dustin and assure him girls his age were "dumb" for not seeing what a dang great guy he was.
like in the grand scheme of things this is very minor, but I do think it's indicative of the incel-esque mindset that in retrospect influenced the narrative as a whole. lucas can't want to be in the team because that would be him Becoming A Bad Guy, because there are No Good Guys in the team for him to actually befriend. also, lucas' desire for popularity can't have any nuance because the story can't acknowledge that lucas being black means he might view this dynamic a little differently, because being (predominantly) white is a privilege both the jocks and the nerds share, and that can't be because The Good Guys are not privileged! they're freaks! outcasts! they're subversive and against the system because they really like to play D&D! or something
sorry i need to rant about this
i remember watching the lost sister episode for the first time and i remember loving it and i remember realising i was one of very few that did.
i always felt like el’s trauma from the lab was glossed over and they never rlly went into her anger towards dr brenner or her grief over her childhood. but then you have this character who is so angry and getting the revenge she deserves, even if it’s not something you believe in you can understand her. like what she says to el about like “if you don’t want revenge that’s ok but never mess with mine” (not exactly but yk what scene im talking about) ive always thought her character was so interesting and complex
i never thought the duffers would bring her back after how many and how much people hated her but then they did and i was so excited.
and then cut to volume two and i actually thought what they did with kali’s character was one of the best parts of vol 2, i mean obviously el and her shouldn’t have killed themselves but you can’t blame her for thinking that, the lab had took everything from her, more so than el i would argue as kali had her friends- her family killed. i dont blame her for trying to stop the lab from hurting anyone else, it seemed so obvious to me but then everyone hated her for trying to convince el they should kill themselves and that she’s working for the military and will betray el at least that’s what i seen a lot of people saying. (cough cough my cousin)
and i really really hoped that when hopper found out about their plan he would be just as focused on saving kali as he was el, and for a minute it seemed like that would happen, his monologue with cuts to kali as well as el, him going back for kali after he’d already grabbed el’s body,
but then all of a sudden kali was dead but at least she didn’t kill herself, at least that’s not what happened, but then that’s exactly what el did. i was so ready for both of these girls to get their happy ending the one they both fucking deserved but no, they both died. and el killed herself
what an ending duffers what an ending
been sobbing to putting a spin on hey there delilah as a little nostalgia kick to put salt on the wound and I can't. the reality set in, the pessimist in me knows nothing will happen in the finale, that us queers took the blow again, and whatever happens won't change the fact that we were fully robbed of what could've been. I feel like the loss has sunk in but I'm still on my knees begging for anyone who's responsible for this mess not to take them away. please don't take byler away from me, man I can't even form a single coherent thought in this state. you don't get how much they helped me survive this horrible world for years on end. please. please give it back.
okay the whole worm hole discovery was cool I enjoyed it and the discovery, although flimsy, still made for a good plot point, that was foreshadowed earlier. But why have dustin say all this.
Just to then contradict yourself later
So what? Destroying the exotic matter is fine now because bombing the bridge will not destroy both worlds and now will only destroy the one world we choose. Then why did we even mention the threat to the world if the threat was never even real?? So much wrong with this season, but this just pisses me off
Tfw you realize that Stranger Things is essentially going to be Netflix's Game of Thrones and we'll get spin-offs of it for years to come even though the main series ended
I am not the kind of person that pretends future seasons of a show I like doesn't exist because of writing changes or stuff like that. For example, I still like and enjoy Sherlock and Voltron despite making polarizing choices for its audiences, and I still consider all of its later content to be canon even if there are a few choices I wasn't crazy about (What they did to Mary in Sherlock, Keith leaving the team for so long / the Adam situation). The overall package is still worth it to me, because of the great gems of moments that are interwoven with the bad.
But after really thinking about this, I gotta say that I really have this enormous “Fuck You” feeling towards season 3 of Stranger Things. For butchering Hopper’s character, as well as for its narrative choices in the finale.
So I’m just gonna pretend it’s not canon. Season 1 and 2 are all I need, now someone recommend to me some good Stranger Things fanfic that doesn't make Hopper an abusive piece of trash, or have the Byers move away with El for no good reason.
The way that Max wasn’t even surprised to see Hopper magically alive when last thing she knew bro was dead af and also how they sidelined the 3 main characters of the show (Mike, Will, El) for fucking HOLLY a character we don’t even know and don’t gaf about for 3 whole hours only for her to do absolutely fuck all and affect literally nothing plot wise lmao it’s cracking me tf up guys idek anymore. Like byler aside the writing is actually insane in every possible way for legit every single character in the story 😭
