Anti-Inflammatory Foods
Since HS flare-ups occur when hair follicles become blocked and inflamed, there are some foods and spices that are anti-inflammatory and good to introduce into your diet for inflammation:
Turmeric (if taken in capsule form, make sure black pepper extract is an ingredient. Black pepper extract is needed to activate the turmeric)
Spinach
Broccoli
Green tea
Sweet Potato
Ginger
Blueberries
Salmon
Tuna
Garlic
Cinnamon
Chia Seeds
Beets
Olive Oil
Coconut Oil
Since dairy can be a trigger, almond milk and coconut milk are great substitutes.
*Everyone’s body is different. What works for some, may not work for others but don’t stop trying to find the best method!
Living with HS
Sometimes it takes a long time for people to get diagnosed or even become aware that what they’re suffering from is Hidradenitis. Once you understand what the disease is, you can start trying to adjust your lifestyle in order to better accommodate your new needs.
Here are some tip that help me for flares
Pre-Flare:
Wear loose and breathable clothing to reduce chaffing against skin
Don’t shave prone areas to try and diminish irritation and further outbreaks
If prone areas become sweaty and moist, gently (DO NOT SCRUB) use sensitive skin facial wipes, witch hazel or alcohol pads to easily refresh area (I like Burt's Bees Sensitive Facial Cleansing Towelettes)
Use anti-bacterial body wash (I like Dial’s Gold body wash)
Limit/Cut Out trigger foods
Exercise at least 30 minutes a day (get the heart rate going!)
Drink at least 2 liters of water each day
Some deodorants may irritate and cause outbreaks so I’ve heard of people using diluted tea tea oil or diluted lavender oil instead or, Crystal Body Deodorant is also a popular among HS sufferers.
During Flare:
Keep infected area clean and dry
Use Vicks Vapor Rub or Manuka honey for unbroken or un-opened skin
Use warm compresses and soaks to try and bring to a head
Utilize panty liners or menstrual pads in clothing for the affected areas
If using medical tape for gauze, apply alcohol or eye make-up remover to cotton ball to saturate the tape and gently remove from skin
Change bandage 2-3 times a day, or when bandage becomes saturated or uncomfortable
Ice packs are great for numbing painful areas (don’t do this if you have the Vicks or Manuka honey on)
Avoid strenuous activity
Avoid stressful situations
Drink lemon ginger tea to help calm inflammation and your anxiety
Stick to your balanced diet
Apply sunscreen after healing has commenced. Discoloration may be reduced and diminish scars
Don’t give up!

Hidradenitis Suppurativa (hi-drad-uh-NIE-tis sup-yoo-ruh-TIE-vuh) or Acne Inversa, is a rare, long term skin condition in which the hair follicles become blocked and inflamed. This blockage and inflammation can cause painful boils, lumps and abscesses anywhere skin may rub together.
These areas include but are not limited to:
Armpits
Buttocks
Groin
Legs
Stomach
Under the breast
Hidradenitis is an autoimmune disease.
There is no cure for Hidradenitis but there are certain measures that can be taken to try and reduce outbreaks.
