Rubroboletus satanas (Lenz) Kuan Zhao & Zhu L. Yang is a basidiomycete inside the family Boletaceae. It is characterised by its big stature (even 20-30cm of cap diameter), an unpleasant smell in mature specimens and by the olivaceous tinges in the cap cuticle. Its reticulated stipe moreover is normally divided into two areas of colors: the upper part near the pores is yellowish and the lower part (3/4) is red. It only grows on calcareous soils under Fagaceae. Poisonous, it can cause severe Gastrointestinal syndrome if ingested raw, possibly all of its co-genus brothers are also poisonous. That said as a warning, in Sicily and in Abruzzo (Italy) it is consumed after various laborious processes that involve parboiling and salt.
