THE SURPRISE
GRAYCEE SPEAKS: keep the request coming guys I love them!!!!
JOIN MY TAGLIST!
the flashes never stop.
"right here!"
"one more!"
"can we get one over your shoulder?"
you smiled on instinct, shifting slightly as another wall of cameras lit up the red carpet.
months of filming.
months of interviews.
months of keeping your project a secret.
and now, the premiere.
you should've been ecstatic.
instead, every few minutes, your eyes drifted toward the end of the carpet.
out of habit.
out of hope.
your publicist leaned in, "you okay?"
you smiled politely, "yeah."
"you keep looking behind you."
"...just making sure im not about to trip."
she laughed, "you got this."
you nodded, "I know."
you just wish Brian were there.
three days earlier, it felt like the world had come crashing down.
"I'm so sorry," his voice crackled through your phone from a different country. "I tried everything."
"I know, Brian."
"I can't leave training."
"it's okay."
"no, it's not."
he sighed heavily, "I want to be there."
"I know."
you smiled even though he couldn't see it, "you've got bigger things to worry about."
the World Cup. it was all anyone could talk about. Mexico had been making an incredible run. the entire world was watching.
"you promise you're not upset?"
"I'm disappointed, not upset," you admitted honestly. "but I'm not upset. you've spent your whole life chasing this. I'd never ask you to choose."
silence.
then, "I love you."
"I love you too."
"I'll make it up to you."
"you don't have to."
"I want to."
then came the round of 16.
Mexico lost.
it was heartbreaking.
the country was mourning what could have been.
interviews flooded every sports channel.
the team flew home earlier than anyone had hoped.
you texted him the moment the match ended.
im proud of you.
hours later, he replied.
wish I could've made everyone proud.
your heart broke.
you already did.
he never answered. you assumed he was overwhelmed.
now...
you stood beneath a sea of flashing cameras.
someone called your name.
"you look incredible!"
you thanked them automatically.
another photographer motioned for you to turn.
"can we get one looking this way?"
you did.
more flashes.
more smiles.
more questions shouted over one another.
then, the crowd changed.
it wasn't loud.
just... different.
the photographers stopped yelling directions. several looked past you instead. a few smiles spread across their faces. one reporter gasped quietly. confused, you turned.
at the very end of the carpet, standing just beyond the barricade, was Brian, looking like he'd sprinted straight from the airport.
for a second, your brain refused to process what you were seeing.
no.
he wasn't supposed to be here. he couldn't be. he smiled. a tired, nervous smile. then he lifted one hand in a tiny wave.
your mouth fell open.
"Brian...?"
every camera immediately swung toward him. the photographers realized before anyone else.
"oh my god!"
"is that-?"
"look over here!"
he ignored every single one of them. his eyes never left yours. you didn't even think. you gathered the skirt of your dress and ran. your heels clicked against the carpet as security instinctively stepped aside.
"baby-" he barely got the word out before you threw your arms around his neck.
the impact nearly knocked him backward.
he laughed, catching you effortlessly.
"I thought you couldn't come!"
"I wasn't going to."
you pulled back just enough to look at him, "what?"
"I was already at the airpot when your premiere started."
"you flew here?"
"I landed an hour ago."
"you idiot! you should be resting!"
"I wanted to be here."
your eyes filled immediately, "but... you said you couldn't."
"I couldn't before. then my schedule changed."
he hesitated, "I figured after everything..."
then his voice caught for just a second.
"...there wasn't anywhere I wanted to be more."
you looked at him.
really looked at him.
the exhaustion beneath his smile.
the faint shadows under his eyes.
the quiet sadness he hadn't quite managed to hide since the World Cup elimination.
"you came straight here."
he shrugged, "I changed in the airport bathroom."
you laughed through your tears, "I can tell."
"my tie?"
"it's crooked."
you reached up and fixed it carefully.
"there."
"better?"
"much."
around you, cameras exploded into a frenzy.
neither of you noticed.
until someone shouted-
"can we get a picture together?"
you both looked over.
Brian immediately stepped back.
"I don't want to take attention away from your night."
you frowned, "you could never."
he smiled sheepishly, "it's okay. I'll wait."
instead of answering, you reached for his hand. you intertwined your fingers, then gently pulled him back towards the center of the carpet.
"what are you doing?'
"sharing!"
"it's your moment."
"our moment."
he looked at you in disbelief.
"I spent months making this movie, and you spent months making the national team. you were there for every late-night script rehearsal. you quizzed me on lines. you listened to me panic after every audition. this is our moment."
his eyes shimmered.
"you don't have to do this."
"I know. I want to."
later, after the carpet was over and the theater lights dimmed, the two of you finally found a quiet hallway away from the crowds.
you rested your head against his shoulder.
"you know... you didn't have to come."
"I know."
"I would've understood."
"I know."
you turned to face him, "so why did you?"
"you've never let me chase my dreams alone. I wasn't about to let you walk your first major premiere without someone cheering the loudest."
inside, surrounded by the quiet hum of the theater before the lights went down, neither of you cared about the headlines.
the movie would always have it's premiere.
and Brian would always be by your side.
