I think the reason people get so defensive about makeup and painful clothes and shoes and looking instagram ready or whatever is because when someone says “hey all of this is stupid” or “you’re been persuaded into it by forces who do not love you”, it makes all the effort and care they put into their appearance feel wasted. It makes people feel small, to be told that the thing they’ve worked so long to achieve is meaningless, and that they fell for it.
