Look, I haven’t read BIB yet, but I’ve been seeing all the commotion around the Blackstairs storyline and went to check it out because I’m a Julian defender, and it seems like nobody understands grey characters unless they’re their favorite.

And honestly, it feels like no one understands context or nuance anymore, because once you see the full picture, there’s no need for the kind of outrage people are having.

And let’s be real, Emma and Julian have always been the CC couple who thought beyond themselves when it came to strategy, and these accusations that “Julian is a cheater” are just an excuse for people to say they already didn’t like him and now “have a reason.” Where was this outrage when Emma pretended to date Julian’s BROTHER?! (P.s. their relationship have always been messie and THATS THE FUN)

It honestly feels like I’m reading Dom Casmurro by Machado de Assis (a classic of Brazilian literature — you guys should read it to develop a bit of critical thinking), where people keep arguing over whether Capitu cheated on her husband or not. And people want to believe she did just so they can feel morally superior and label her as the worst person in the world, when in reality it was her husband who was the egocentric one.

But to wrap it up, I’ll say that this is partly Cassandra’s fault (and partly the readers’ fault, for not being able to handle someone who isn’t 100% good or evil). She’s been dragging out this universe for too long and hasn’t known what to do with so many characters for a while now — sometimes she doesn’t even try to build a solid plot anymore and just throws something together. BIB might have its importance later on, but judging by the reactions to these novellas, I honestly think it’s time to end this universe before she manages to ruin even more something she did so well for years.

Any good tsc adaptation would need horror

It’s not just set dressing but a feature

(It’s been ages since I’ve seen the CoB movie but from what I remember I do appreciate what they did there, at least with some of the demons)

Looking back on my time with this series I realise I always enjoyed these elements a lot; they were part of the reason it fascinated me so much. Because a lot of ya lit at the time was supernatural and featured ‘creatures of the night’ but mostly didn’t really deliver on the premise. Meanwhile, I was obsessed with the chills I got from TMI when I was 12, and never succeeded in resurrecting that feeling until I started reading actual horror lit as an adult.

Some personal highlights were:

- The disgusting demons in TMI (some of my core memories are the Abbadon fight in CoB and the Raum demons in CoA)

- Agramon & the massacre in the silent city

- The clockwork creatures in TID

- Overall the way the fae are portrayed, some of the descriptions in CoA still haunt me

- Lilith’s snake eyes aah I loved it

- Malcolm with his silly little Hands of Glory, also later on: the state his resurrected corpse was in, so disturbing, amazing, 10/10

- The Belial possesion scene in ChoT

One thing I genuinely really like about the last hours and the dark artfices is that you can see how different Cassie’s original plans for the series were.

Btw all this information is stuff you can find on her tumblr from like 2010 and above!!!

Like for TDA in particular, Julian was meant to be really heavy smoker, Cristina’s name was Carmen and she was definitely going to have a very different personality (Cassie mentioned how this ‘Carmen’ liked to dye her hair), Livia was going to tell people her name was Olivia because she thought Livia was odd, AND there was meant to be another blackthorn! Who was originally going to be around 5 I think? And her name was Ariadne!!

Now the last hours is one where you can 100% see the major differences in how the characters and story was originally planned. I don’t know how long Cassie had actually planned this series for, but it was definitely a longggg time.

One major difference is definitely just the characters in general. If you look at James in the midnight heir his personality is so drastically different, there was meant to be alot more characters (I.E, Charlotte and Henry where meant to have daughters which I wish we got!!!). Not to mention appearances were very different as well!!!

Anna was going to have green eyes, and Christopher was going to have longer hair (look at that pony tail!).

Another example of this!!! I don’t think I could make who half these characters, and ngl looking at this feels so cursed!!

I think it’s meant to go Alastair, Alexander Lightwood (Gabriel and Cecily’S youngest son), next to him is either Cecily or most likely an earlier conception of Anna, Lucie and Cordelia, James and Matthew, behind them is Jesse and Grace I think! I than… Charles and Christopher??? Very odd duo. On the boat is herongraystairs, and than next to them I think is meant to be more lightwoods? I presume whoever they were would be our now Thomas, Eugina and Barbara. And I could not tell you for the life of me who was behind them.

I think the last hours is especially fun to look at because they have a decent amount of old fanart!!! Looking at white Alastair and Cordelia feels so… wrong 😭😭

TLH was also her series most impacted by covid!!! And she had planned to give the series a more tragic end, so I’m really curious what her original plan for that in particular was. I have theory’s something was meant to happen with Matthew but that’s just me.

I really enjoy seeing the difference in the original plan and what we got! Seeing the earlier stages feels so weird!!
