So I’ve been doing a bit of a deep dive into the Christian influences in THG. There were some I was already aware of like Panem sort of coming from Pandemonium, the Capital of Hell in Paradise Lost where Lucifer resides. You can even view President Snow as alluding to Lucifer with his snake references by Katniss.
In a way, THG is about the fall of America, an America that has lost itself to the worst of its past mistakes as the Districts are based on American history (District 13: Site R or “underground pentagon.” District 12: Appalachian Coal Camps. District 11: Plantations and/or Sharecropping. District 4: Hollywood/Celebrity Culture. District 2: Manhattan Project. These are my hcs though.)
I’m admittedly ambivalent about this because does this mean THG is about criticizing America, or criticizing America falling? It appears to do both and its main political position is being anti extremism.
Either way Panem seems to reference Catholicism and the Bible.
The number 13 in the Bible represents rebellion (such as the one led by Satan), apostasy, lawlessness, the governments/nations created by men, unlike 12 which represents divine government and perfection, God’s Kingdom and why God ordered the holy city of Jerusalem to have 12 gates, 12 foundations, protected by 12 angels. 13 corrupts the perfection of 12, such as Jesus and his 12 apostles at the Last Supper, with Judas, who famously betrayed Jesus, as the 13th. Or the 12 tribes of Israel, that technically had 13 tribes being based on Jacob’s 12 sons, but had one of them split. This is seen as a schism in a way, which is an issue in Catholicism, seeing itself as the one true Church that is God’s Kingdom on Earth.
And religion itself, Christianity that is, may be canon in THG as Katniss, pg 84 of CF, says, “designs of small, fat children with wings look down at us from every angle.” Sounds like Angels, specifically Putti that represents innocence or the baby interpretation of Cherubs. Katniss doesn’t seem to know what Angels (Religion, Christianity) are and the trilogy is in her POV, but that doesn’t mean they are so far into the future that they’re nonexistent. (Unknown future ≠ distant future.)
But what is a story influenced by Christianity without Christ? Well, that’s where Peeta comes in.
While he’s not a Jesus analogy or anything, Peeta references Jesus, inspiring humanity through the power of (heterosexual) love, lol, sparking the resurrection of a fallen America as Panem has now fallen, making way for democracy to return. Peeta himself “dies” via highjacking, but eventually comes back and returns to Katniss and loving her. This may possibly reference Jesus’s resurrection. It wouldn’t surprise me if the trilogy itself also does this as Jesus rose on the 3rd day and this happens to Peeta in the 3rd book, idk. 3 is an important number in Christianity especially surrounding Jesus due to the 3 wise men, Peter denying then admitting his love for Jesus both 3 times, the Trinity itself, 3 represents completeness. Even the Lark in Peeta’s surname is a morning bird that symbolizes hope, the Church, and Jesus Christ.
And he never wishes revenge on the Capitol (Rome) despite them “killing” him like Jesus after being crucified by the Romans. Even his “boy with the bread” title is from literally giving Katniss bread in a way that sacrificed himself because he had always loved her even without her knowing which inspired her to make her daily bread.🥁
If you stuck with me this long thank you because I’m honestly still trying to gather my thoughts on this, sorry if I lost anyone on the way! I’m not totally certain about everything, my main opinion is I kinda have mixed feelings on Peeta maybe being a blonde blued eyed Jesus Christ. Whether Jesus was a real guy or not he’s essentially the most whitewashed person ever. But I think this is why he’s more pure when it comes to morality and it lowkey feels like he’s teaching Katniss as she comes to love him and why the story vindicates his moral standards, but I digress! I still like the potential Christian/Christian folklore references for the most part. It’s been fun to theorize.
Okay, you know how when Wyatt is reaped for the games, a scuffle breaks out around his family, someone accusing someone else of “jinxing” him?
I’m going to argue the reading that Wyatt’s dad—or another family member, they’re all a part of the business—accepted a bet that was placed on Wyatt. Some spiteful member of D12 placed a bet that a member of the Callow family, even Wyatt specifically, would be drawn. Or the inverse, that someone placed a bet that the Callow family would go untouched, and possibly hoping otherwise (Wyatt is passed over, they make money, Wyatt is reaped, it’s the satisfaction that the Callows suddenly have to understand the real pain of the reaping). It’s kinda sick to accept a bet that involves your own family, your own child, but desperate people do what desperate people do, and when you haven’t been hit personally, there’s the illusion of being untouchable.
Then Wyatt is reaped, and in the eyes of the now-mourning Callow family, this was caused by accepting that bet. They crossed some unspoken line by trying to make money off the inclusion of their own blood. The bet was placed too close to home, and influenced the odds. Because it would’ve been one thing if Wyatt was passed over, but since he was drawn? Since they’re making money off him? It’s a clear sign that they were tempting fate, something they might’ve even debated. But someone ignored that concern and took the bet, in their eyes, killing their child. And that is unforgivable.
Brutus is President Snow's illegitimate bastard and that's why he shaves his head! The signs were there the whole time.
(For clarity, this is a joke)
fun (?) headcanon of mine about the hunger games:
Haymitch's injuries were super grotesque, but his scars weren't removed because he asked them not to be. Only after this was it mandated that victors get a full body polish without consent. It explains why some previous victors may have had them, but helps show why they let Chaff not have a prosthetic. Just something fun :D
My Sunrise On The Reaping theory!
This probably isn’t true and it feels like a huge stretch but I think it’s fun so I’m gonna share it anyway!
I think that Lenore Dove, Haymitch’s love interest, is going to be Katniss’ aunt. It’s been said that SOTR is the final piece of the puzzle—the thing that makes everything make sense. Since it’s become widely believed that Lenore Dove is covey, and it’s a huge fan theory that Katniss’ paternal family is covey, I think it could make sense for Lenore Dove and The Unamed Everdeen Dad to be related. But I think it would be most impactful if they were to be siblings/twins. The theme of sibling relationships and the way they impact our lives is carried throughout every THG book. Katniss and Prim, Gale and his siblings, Mrs. Undersee and Maysilee, and now Haymitch and Sid. This has been pertinent in every single book. So, to show one more relationship—two people who are killed at the hands of Snow (as a punishment and from neglect)—it would tie together everything we’ve seen. And it would confirm where Katniss has come from and why Snow was so tortured by her.
TLDR: Lenore Dove is Mr. Everdeen’s sister!
So, what do y’all think? Let me know if this is crazy or if I cooked lowkey!!
I honestly don't think the 18 year olds during the 75th we're celebrating when the quarter quell was announced. The rebellion was already bubbling and snow putting victors on the chopping block, the people who are supposed to be bathed in luxury was probably terrifying.
random snowjanus edit I made yesterday, first time doing any editing so …
