Intro to Ticker Tape Synesthesia
One of my types of synesthesia is called ticker tape synesthesia (which is associative, like all my types of synesthesia). Essentially, my life has subtitles. Participating in a conversation? Everyone’s words (including my own, plus there’s my thoughts) are literally spelled out in my brain. Same thing happens if I’m listening to a song with lyrics, so it’s like having an instant lyric video (with colors, shapes, etc. courtesy of my sound-color synesthesia/chromesthesia.) These “mental subtitles” aren’t something I can help, but they come in handy more often than not, so I’m okay with that.
I didn’t even realize that ticker tape wasn’t normal until a few months ago. I also didn’t realize that some synesthetes with ticker tape see different fonts than me. I spent a while comparing different fonts to my brain’s, and the closest I can get is actually the same font as this post: Helvetica Neue. I didn’t know that until I got Tumblr a couple of weeks ago or so, so my best guess before now was Times New Roman (mostly because they actually got the “I” right so it doesn’t look like an “L”, plus a few other reasons). While not all the letters in either font are exactly what I see, finding a similar font is the best way I have to describe it to other people and make visual representations of what I see.
The words are usually white against a black background, though the background depends on the music I’m listening to, the speaker’s voice, or if I’m just lost in my own thoughts.
This post is getting a bit long, so I’m going to end it here.
