Warnings: Swearing, violence, bit of gore
“Woah…” You gasp, taking in the sight of the large city in front of you. “Would you look at that…”
“Are we sure this isn’t Seattle?” Lev tentatively asks.
“Yeah, the sign back there said National City.” Abby ruffles the little bit of hair that's grown atop the boy's head.
“Look at those buildings.” You gape as you make your way down the street.
Many of the buildings are beginning to crumble if they haven’t already. A few of the larger buildings have already collapsed.
“Do you think there are any groups that have control of the city like in Seattle?” You ask.
“Jeez, I hope not.” Lev answers.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if there are. Just keep an eye out.” Abby warns.
“Woah, look at this cafe.” You press your face to the glass to look inside. “We can raid it, it looks pretty well stocked.”
“Oonas?” Lev reads the crooked lettering above the doors. “People had strange names for these things.”
The three of you head inside, careful not to alert any Infected that might be inside. You go through the drawers behind the counter, collecting any stray materials that would help you in the future.
“Sweet! A whole Molotov!” You quietly exclaim to your friends. “We can watch those babies burrn.”
“Fuck yeah, arson!” Lev cheers, coming over to look at your new item.
Abby chuckles at your guys’ antics, collecting materials for herself.
You stuff the bottle in your back and collect a couple rags before finding a way into the back rooms to look for more stuff. You scout the dark rooms, finding a couple materials here and there. No Infected yet.
“Alright, got what we need?” You ask, emerging from the darkness of the back rooms.
“Yeah, let’s go.” Abby confirms.
You exit the cafe and make your way down the street yet again.
“So, do you think they’ve really disbanded? Or do you think that there’s probably some secret group of them?” Abby asks you as you and Lev make your way down the overgrown street.
“I don’t know what to believe.” You answer, shrugging your backpack onto your shoulders. “If we find a group that calls themselves the Fireflies, then they still exist, and if not, I guess we’ll never know. But what we will know, is those fuckers lied.”
“Hey guys? It's getting kinda dark, and I’m getting kinda tired.” Lev says from your right, rubbing the back of his neck.
“Yeah, I’m getting tired as well.” You comment. “How about we see if this building is clear and we can rest in there.” You suggest, referring to a crippled skyscraper to you guys’ left.
The majority of the building looks intact, but from about the 5th floor and up seems to have collapsed and fallen into its neighboring building. The building is made of glass, so spotting any Infected outside the building would be easy. The interior looks clear and has many easy places to hide.
“You sure?” Abby asks, her tone unsure. “It's made of glass.”
“Better to spot Infected or any unfriendly groups that’s outside the building. Plus, it would be reinforced glass.” You reassure her.
“I’ll take it as long as I can rest.” Lev says, stepping towards the building.
You follow him and put your face up to the glass, holding your hands up to peer inside to look for any Infected. “Looks clear from here, let's go investigate, then we can rest.”
The three of you silently enter the building, guns and bows drawn, flashlights engaged, and eyes and ears looking and listening for the movement and sound of any Infected. Abby locates a pipe to secure the Pull doors. Lev locates another object or two to jam a rotating door. They quickly join you and you clear the first floor before you head over to scout the stairs. They are only clear to about the third floor before it’s collapsed and blocked by other debris and objects, relieving you guys of clearing another couple floors.
You spot a couple Runners on the third floor and you move in to quickly and quietly take them down. You sneak up from behind and grab them, preventing them from making too much noise, and slit its throat, coating the floor around you with its blood. Abby and Lev take down a couple others. You can hear the snap of one’s neck, courtesy of Abby, and you watch as one has an arrow go straight through its head. Luckily there’s only Runners on this floor. You take one more out before calling it.
“Higher levels are clear, let’s head downstairs and clear it.” You report to your friends.
“Alright, be careful.” Abby quietly confirms. “We don’t need any surprises. Make sure you’ve got masks in case there’s spores.”
“Roger that.” You confirm, leading you guys to the stairs and taking them down to the basement.
“Coast is clear of Spores.” Lev reports as you guys make your way further into the basement.
You hold your Pistol tight, finger resting straight next to the trigger as you prepare to round a corner from the stairs into the basement. You silently squeeze through a couple of crooked sliding doors into a dark laboratory looking space. It’s full of lab equipment that’s scattered everywhere. Your flashlights scan the jumbled folding tables laid out in a crescent shape about the room. A main work table sits in front of a wrecked isolation room. Broken vials and beakers, microscopes, and other equipment litter the main workspace and strange gadgets lay both on the floor and along different work spaces placed around the large room. There’s a few large metal crates and cases standing up and laying down scattered about the room.
“It looks clear.” Lev announces, lowering his bow.
“Alright.” Abby lowers her gun, but doesn’t put it away.
“Yeah…” You draw out. “Something doesn’t sit right with me though. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for any movement.” You caution the others, also lowering your gun a bit.
You give one more look around the room, getting a few different angles before deciding it is indeed clear. You hesitantly holster your gun and look around the room.
“Whoever had this lab made some cool shit.” You comment, looking over the strange tech.
“Yeah. Don't touch anything.” Abby warns. “You don't know what it is and it could, like, power up or something. Looks sketchy.”
“Okay, Mom.” Lev playfully mocks. “This stuff’s really old, so all the batteries would be dead and nothing would work anyways.”
Chuckling, you look over a strange object, wondering what kind of person would make so much stuff, and for what? What did these things do? Did this person try to work to save Humanity from the Outbreak? Is the person still alive? Suddenly, a beam of light is emitted from it, scorching the wall across the room, and quickly deactivating again.
“I swear, I didn’t touch it!” You exclaim, throwing your hands up as Abby whips around to scold you.
A small rustle as the machine dies away catches your attention. “Shit, I don’t think we’re alone.”
You and Abby draw your guns and Lev loads an arrow. Everyone is tense, waiting for something to happen. You stalk around the room carefully, ready to shoot anything.
Suddenly, a scream pierces the air, startling you. A Runner races toward you, eyes fixated on you. The shots from your gun pierce the air as well, adding to the growing chaos. The Runner howls in pain, but continues to race towards you. You put bullet after bullet into the damn thing, finally watching it drop to the ground, still wriggling. A Clicker springs from the shadows on top of Abby, forcing her to deal with it now. You place a foot atop the Runners back, holding it to the floor as it desperately flails about on the ground, and you put a bullet into the back of it's head, killing it.
Another Clicker springs into action, knocking over a bunch of stuff from the tables and grabbing you from behind. You struggle in its grasp, trying to keep its face away from you. An arrow is put into the thing's arm, causing it to screech in your ear, overwhelming your senses.
“Dammit, get off of me!” You grunt, reaching with your free hand for a knife or shiv or something to fight back with.
The light of another activated object begins to illuminate the entire lab, forcing a Bloater out of the shadows.
“Shit! Bloater!” Abby calls, still fighting off her Clicker.
Lev turns his attention to the large beast, putting arrow after arrow into its body. The boy’s arrows have very little effect on it, only managing to anger it. The Clicker begins to pull you backward, practically dragging you towards the Bloater and the light source.
“Y/N!” Abby shouts, finally ending her Clicker and shaking its limp body off of her.
“Abby!” You cry back, continuing to fight off the creature as you’re pulled backwards. “Dammit! Get off!”
You try to get a glimpse around to locate the Bloater, which is now right behind the Clicker and yourself. It lets out its own blood curdling screech as it disappears into the light.
“What the…” You begin to panic even more and desperately fight off the Clicker.
“Hang on, Y/N!” Lev yells, shooting in your direction both at the Clicker and the device that's activated, failing to take down either.
You can feel the Clicker lose it's footing, now hanging onto you to keep from blowing away from some weird force.
“Fuck!” You curse. “Lev! Abby!”
You scream out in fear as you too, lose your footing and are pulled into the light. Into another world.
